This month’s St. Louis Commerce Magazine focuses on the business of wealth, beginning with our cover story on local entrepreneur Rodger Riney who has built a national discount-investment brokerage firm. Scottrade currently serves 1.7 million clients with 300-plus satellite offices across the country, employing 750 people in St. Louis.

To get a fresh perspective on banking trends in St. Louis we interviewed eight area banking executives, including David Kemper, chairman, president and CEO of Commerce Bancshares; Shaun Hayes, president and CEO of Missouri Banking, National City; Pete Genovese, vice chairman and CEO, St. Louis, UMB Financial; Bob Witterschein, CEO and senior loan officer, Southwest Bank; Sally Roth, area president and CEO, upper Midwest, Regions Financial; Patricia Mercurio, Missouri president, Bank of America; F. Christopher McLaughlin, executive vice president—director of retail banking, First Banks; and Joe Imbs, regional chairman, St. Louis market president, U.S. Bancorp.

Shera Dalin takes a fresh look at venture capital activity in the region, including a look at the venture capital success story of Prolog Ventures. The St. Louis venture capital firm, formed in 2001, currently has more than $100 million under management.

RCGA economist Bryan Bezold notes that St. Louisans receive a higher percent of income from sources other than labor than the rest of the nation. Nationwide income from dividends, interest, or rent represents approximately 15.6 percent of total personal income, or $5,366 a person. In St. Louis it is 17.9 percent or $6,361 a person.

Speaking of investments, ConocoPhillips is in the midst of a $2 billion expansion of its Wood River Refinery in Illinois. Susan Caba writes about the project, which would add refinery capacity and boost the workforce by 5%.

Laurie Burstein examines the economic impact of the arts on St. Louis. The Regional Arts Commission finds that residents from across the region spent $561.2 million related to the arts in 2005. This spending supported 18,537 jobs.

Also this month, with daily news headlines filled with reports of conflicts from around the world, Allison Cole reports on a unique initiative that joins St. Louis and its sister city Lyon, France. Entitled Waging Peace in Our Communities, the program by Sister Cities International is designed to communicate concerns that will eventually be developed into actions aimed at addressing each city’s integration issues.

With the arrival of a new season, what would Fall be without football? This month’s issue examines the St. Louis Gateway Classic Sports Foundation, which provides substantial financial support to the community through scholarships, sports and social programs. To date, more than $2.2 million has been raised for the Foundation’s Scholarship Fund. And finally, this month’s Spotlight is on Bob Wallace, executive vice president and general counsel for the St. Louis Rams. Christine Imbs writes about the three-decade-long NFL veteran’s love of the game and how his career started with a summer job.
