THE MONTHLY TECHNOLOGY COLUMN FEATURING TIMELY TECH TRENDS, TIPS AND UPDATES

WHEN YOU ACCEPT THE NOBEL PRIZE, allow us the honor of saying, “We knew him/her when...”

Hired a new CIO? Let us know about it. Landed a research grant? Don’t keep it to yourself. Found a cure for the common cold? We’re all ears. w We’re looking for a few good bits, bytes and blurbs about technological developments for this new monthly column. Items need not be biotech-related, though we surmise that many will be, considering our region has been dubbed the BioBelt.

SAVVIS Solutions To Benefit Financial Customers in Bermuda and Caymans

SAVVIS Inc. has inked a comprehensive distribution agreement with TeleBermuda and TeleCayman, effectively giving the telecom firms exclusive rights to offer select SAVVIS solutions in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.

TeleBermuda and TeleCayman will leverage SAVVIS’ global private financial network to develop and market products and services to clients primarily in the banking and finance, insurance and reinsurance, and hedge fund industries. SAVVIS’ product offering will complement the voice, private lines, dedicated Internet, DSL and hosted business continuity products and services that TeleBermuda and TeleCayman already offer.

Nanotechnology Enables Low-Dose Treatment of Artery-Clogging Plaques

Laboratory tests have shown that a minuscule dose of the drug fumagillin can inhibit the growth of atherosclerotic plaques in rabbits. It’s not so much the drug itself as how it was delivered—by nanoparticles, microscopically small spheres developed by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine.

“We’ve demonstrated that the nanoparticles can deliver a drug to a disease site in a living organism,” says Patrick Winter, Ph.D., research assistant professor of medicine. An atherosclerosis plaque results when a buildup of cholesterol, inflammatory cells and fibrous tissue forms inside an artery. If a plaque ruptures, it can block blood flow to the heart or brain, causing heart attack or stroke.

Next, the research group plans to study the effect of fumagillin nanoparticles in the treatment of cancerous tumors.

Advanced ICU Care: High-Tech Alternative for Critical-Care Nurses

Advanced ICU Care, a company that connects critical-care physicians and nurses to hospital intensive care units via telemedicine, employs remote computer monitoring to keep track of vital signs, medications, and laboratory results. Meanwhile, staffers are connected to ICU patients and their care providers through bedside cameras and microphones.

Dr. Dellice Dickhaus (in the foreground) and Darlene Hopkins, R.N. utilize the eICU technology for ICU patients.

A technology platform developed by VISICU, based in Baltimore, links local hospital ICUs with Advanced ICU Care’s operations center in St. Louis.

Keeping up with medicine’s technological advances is key to recruiting nurses, says Christi Longnecker, RN, Advanced ICU Care’s director of nursing. Advanced ICU Care nurses monitor patients’ conditions around-the-clock, alerting hospital nurses if potential complications arise.

Nurses have the opportunity to provide virtual care for as many as 70 ICU patients and share their critical care expertise and clinical skills with as many as 30 bedside ICU nurses.
