ST. LOUIS HOME TO ONE OF WORLD’S TEN BEST PUBLIC SPACES


City Museum in St. Louis has been named one of the World’s Best Public Spaces by PPS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining public places that build communities. City Museum is one of ten sites featured in the August issue of PPS’ online newsletter, Making Places.

Also included are Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia; Jardin Juarez and Market Hall in Juchitan, Mexico; the Museum of Modern Art Interior and Sculpture Garden in New York, N.Y.; Kungsportsavenyn in Göteborg, Sweden; Devon Street in Chicago, Ill.; Largo Glênio Peres in Porto Alegre, Brazil; Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, Wis.; Dapper Market in Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and Trg Bana Jelacica in Zagreb, Croatia.

All ten locations are being inducted into the Great Public Spaces Web site at www.pps.org/gps/. The online collection features the world’s best parks, markets, streets, buildings and districts. There are four key qualities that most great places share: They are accessible, comfortable, sociable and activity-oriented.

ST. LOUIS DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION FIRMS RANK AMONG NATION’S BIGGEST


A number of St. Louis-area construction and design firms are named on Engineering News-Record’s annual lists of the largest firms in the construction industry. Companies are ranked according to their revenue in 2004.

St. Louis firms that made the Top 400 Contractors list include McCarthy Building Cos., No. 28; Fru-Con Construction Corp., No. 49; Alberici Constructors, No. 60; Insituform Technologies Inc., No. 70; Walton Construction, No. 98; Clayco, No. 107; S.M. Wilson & Co., No. 138; Fred Weber Inc., No. 192; Nooter Construction Co., No. 205; Paric Corp., No. 304; HBE Corp., No. 319; The Korte Co., No. 340; Brinkmann Constructors, No. 371; and H.B.D. Contracting Inc., No. 376.

According to the magazine, the combined revenue of general contractors on the Top 400 list climbed 8.5 percent to $209.74 billion and 69.3 percent of the firms increased revenue from 2003 to 2004.

Five local companies also ranked on the Top 100 Design-Builders list: Clayco, No. 24; HBE Corp., No. 59; Brinkmann Constructors, No. 78; Alberici Corp., No. 83; and The Korte Co., No. 85.


An HOK project, the $62 million Avante´ Center for Science, Health Careers
and Emerging Technologies at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Ill., helped propel the firm to the top ranking among architect-engineers in Engineering News Record’s annual “Top-500 Design Firms” survey.

The Top 500 Design Firms list included HOK, No. 28; Fru-Con Engineering Inc., No. 432; and CASCO Diversified, No. 456.

ST. LOUIS FIRMS MAKE BUSINESSWEEK’S HOT GROWTH LIST

Five St. Louis companies are among the fastest-growing firms in the country, according to the Hot Growth Companies list published in BusinessWeek’s annual ranking. Reliv International ranked the highest among St. Louis-based companies at No. 13. The producer of nutritional supplements, food and skin products posted $97 million in sales and a 149.7 percent increase in profit over a three-year period. Engineered Support Systems ranked No. 19 with earnings of $80.8 million and a 59.5 percent increase in profits.


Build-A-Bear Workshop claimed the No. 25 spot with $22.7 million in earnings and a 108.8 percent increase in profits. BusinessWeek also ran a special feature on Build-A-Bear Workshop’s incredible success under the guidance of founder and CEO Maxine Clark.

Panera Bread ranked No. 37 with $38.6 million in earnings and a 42.9 percent increase in profits. TALX claimed the No. 92 spot by earning $12.9 million and increasing profits by 45.9 percent.

The magazine sifted through a database of 2,200 publicly traded companies and selected those with annual sales of $50 million to $1.5 billion per year, a current market value greater than $25 million, and a current stock price of at least $5. Annual sales for the top 100 finishers grew an average of 30.7 percent over three years. Annual earnings jumped an amazing 118.9 percent over the same time period.

Kupper Parker Communications Inc. has been ranked among the top advertising agencies in the country by AdWeek, Advertising Age, PRWeek and BtoB magazines. PRWeek and AdWeek ranked the firm among the top 25 independent agencies in the United States. It also ranked among the top advertising agencies in Advertising Age and among the top interactive agencies in BtoB magazine.
