This month’s cover story features 2003 Spirit of St. Louis Science & Technology Award winner Emerson and its dynamic CEO David Farr. Long known as one of St. Louis’ prized Fortune 500 headquarters companies, Emerson has also long been a world leader in technology. Emerson’s award will be presented at the 8th annual St. Louis Regional Technology Top 50 Awards Gala on Thursday, September 25, presented by the RCGA and Deloitte & Touche. Learn about these 50 pacesetting technology firms as well in this month’s cover story. Once again it’s an impressive group of high-tech firms that are helping to attract investment and recognition to our region.

Among this year’s awardees are a number of familiar names from past Top 50 annual rankings. Most notably, both Chemir Analytical Services (formerly Chemir Polytech) and World Wide Technologies have made the list for the seventh consecutive year; Quilogy (formerly Solutech), Rose International, Spartech and Talisen Technologies (formerly Aerotech Service Group) appear for the sixth time.

Now for some interesting numbers.

The 30 Top 50 Information Technology companies in the Technology sector:

• posted 2002 revenues of $2.8 billion.

• had an average five-year growth rate of 393 percent.

• spent more than $138 million for research and development in 2002.

The 10 Plant and Life Science companies:

• posted 2002 revenues of $1.3 billion.

• invested $31 million in capital investment in 2002.

The 10 Advanced Manufacturing companies:

• posted 2002 revenues of $2.6 billion.

• had an average five-year growth rate of 125 percent.

Considering 90 percent of the technology and advanced manufacturing companies and 80 percent of the plant and life science companies are publicly held, those numbers represent some outstanding regional investment opportunities. The individual write-ups by Pam Droog offer fascinating summaries of each firm’s growth and areas of expertise.

I hope you’ll join me, the Spirit of St. Louis and Top 50 winners, along with sponsors Armstrong Teasdale LLP, Edward Jones, Southwest Bank, KMOX Radio, the St. Louis Business Journal and St. Louis Science Center, at the Thursday evening Sept. 25 awards ceremony at the Science Center.

Also in this issue, Chas Adams acquaints us with Beth Davis, senior vice president and market manager of Infinity Broadcasting St. Louis since February.

Davis successfully uses her experience as a teacher to promote her radio stations, KEZK-FM, KYKY-FM and KMOX-AM. Those three stations combined are the top revenue producer in the market.

The next few weeks also bring the exciting grand openings of not one, not two, but three major new arts facilities. Bob Schaper takes us on a brief tour of the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and Regional Arts Commission.

Finally, a limited number of subscriptions are still available for the 2003-2004 St. Louis Speakers Series, which starts this month. Presented by Maryville University, this year’s roster features Rudy Giuliani, Elie Wiesel, Amy Tan, Frank Abagnale, Bob Woodward, David Gergen and Garrison Keillor at Powell Hall. The RCGA is proud to once again sponsor this outstanding series, along with KWMU-FM and American Equity Mortgage.
