MONSANTO CO.

Monsanto Co. (NYSE: MON) is the recipient of this year’s Spirit of St. Louis Technology Award. This award was first given last year to Sigma-Aldrich Corp. and is presented to a company in recognition of its long-term commitment to the community and sustained success in technology advancement.

“Monsanto is an obvious choice for this award,” notes Dick Fleming, president and CEO, St. Louis RCGA. “As a plant and life sciences industry leader in their century of business activity in St. Louis, they have submitted more than a quarter of all the plant biotechnology- oriented patent applications received nationally by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.”

Monsanto is a leading provider of agricultural products and integrated solutions for farmers. It makes Roundup®, the world’s best-selling herbicide, and other crop protection products. The company produces leading seed brands, including DEKALB and Asgrow, and provides its seed partners with biotechnology traits for insect protection and herbicide tolerance. Monsanto strives to bring products and technologies together to improve productivity and to reduce the costs of farming.

HENDRIK VERFAILLIE,
Monsanto Co.

Behind this life sciences trailblazer is their leader, Hendrik Verfaillie, president and CEO since March 2000, when Pharmacia & Upjohn acquired Monsanto. Belgian born, Verfaillie has been with the company close to 26 years.

The life sciences industry leader has more than 14,000 employees and $5.4 billion in revenues in 2000, 10 percent of revenue is dedicated to R&D.  Its revenues over the past three years have grown by more than $200 million.

Those numbers don’t include Monsanto’s support of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, the Nidus Center, Missouri Botanical Garden, the St. Louis Science Center or the effort that’s underway to make the St. Louis region the “BioBelt.”

In November 2001 it celebrated its 100th year in operation and in 2002 it is emerging once again as an independent firm. With the spin off from Pharmacia complete, Monsanto will again rank as a Fortune 500 headquarters firm.
