Since 1995, Access US has been one of the fastest growing Internet Service Providers in the Midwest. The two-time Top 50 winner, which ranked last year as the region’s fourth fastest growing technology company with five-year growth of 1,416%, is dedicated to providing people and businesses with the highest quality Internet services. Rob Semaan, CEO, says the company continues to grow because of its local focus. “We consider ourselves a regional ISP with a hometown flavor. Our services are priced lower than most national providers, yet we offer higher quality customer service, since we know the people and communities we serve,” he notes.

Even with the slower economy, the company has “managed to keep most of our customers happy by continuing to provide good, quality service.” And the key to that service is Access US’s employees. “We are most proud of our employee team at Access US … for having grown our company rapidly into the number one spot for ISPs based in St. Louis and for staying in business despite the tough economic times,” Semaan states.

PETE GALLAGHER, AMSI/HITS

A newcomer to the Top 50, AMSI/HITS was founded by Pete Gallagher in 1997 to provide microfilm conversion services. From that humble beginning out of a storefront on Florissant Road in Ferguson, the company has grown to a multi-million dollar operation employing more than 100 people in a half dozen locations throughout the United States. The operation today revolves around the conversion of business records (paper, film, fiche) to digital format (CD and DVD).

According to Mike Polak, CFO, there are two areas that set the company apart. “First we use standard Windows technology so there is no additional hardware or software investment required to use our services. Anyone with a PC running Windows with a CD or DVD has the hardware and software needed to view the converted documents. The second thing that sets us apart is that we approach our clients’ problems from their points of view,” he states. In April AMSI/HITS moved into its new headquarters, which quadrupled the size of its previous location.

When DataServ started in 1994, it was the first Application Service Provider (ASP) in the country. “That’s been our biggest competitive advantage,” says Jeff Haller, managing partner. “Our experience and time in the industry makes a big difference to our clients.” They include Marsh@Work Solutions, Washington University School of Medicine, Sony Pictures, and Petco. The company has 50 employees.

“Listening to our clients has been the key to our success—we understand what they need, figure out the problem and offer them solutions,” he notes. Since Sept. 11, companies are thinking more about electronically storing documents. “We typically scan and store new documents for clients, but now they’re sending us older documents that they want to make sure are preserved.” An expanded function offered by DataServ is an automatic cash application that allows clients to receive payments through scanning versus data entry. This new service highlights the challenge for DataServ—keeping up with technology. “Our clients are counting on us to be up-to-date. Technology changes quickly and it is driving further changes as clients are demanding systems to be more efficient,” he states. This is DataServ’s second year on the Top 50.

The company has identified the primary areas of traditional correspondence between the private practice physician and acute or hospital-based medical services and made this interaction possible on the Web. The physician is able to pre-admit patients, schedule visits and tests, place orders for patient care, and review computerized medical record information using the World Wide Web.

EDWARD J. "TED" KOPLAR, Veil Interactive Technologies

Developed by Interactive Systems, Inc. of Beaverton, Ore., VEIL’s technology was acquired by Edward J. “Ted” Koplar and relocated to St. Louis in 1996 as Koplar Interactive Systems, Inc. In January 2000, the name was changed to VEIL Interactive Technologies reflecting the enabling technology—video encoded invisible light. VEIL is an encoded data stream in the broadcast video signal that is invisible to the human eye and allows users to interact with a broadcast on television using electronic devices.

Commercial applications of VEIL technology include promotional events, viewer loyalty programs and commercial verification. Recently, VEIL enabled an interactive marketing promotion for AT&T and Ericsson Mobile Phones during an ABC Network prime-time television show. Everyday, VEIL is used in more than 100 U.S. TV markets to track the occurrence of television programming and commercials within hours of airing. “Few times in a lifetime do you come across an idea that can change people’s behavior and enhance their daily lives. Voltron was one of those things, and I believe that VEIL, if successful, will be another,” says Ted Koplar, president and CEO. The company employs 25 people.

This is their first appearance on the Top 50.
