McCarthy
Completes Foundation Systems on CDC Research Lab
McCarthy
Building Companies is construction manager for this
370,000-square-foot Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory
for the CDC in Atlanta. |
|
Serving as construction
manager, McCarthy Building Companies Inc., has completed the basic
foundation systems on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s
$132 million Building 18 — Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory.
Construction on the project began in October 2001 at the organization’s
Roybal Campus in Atlanta, Ga. The architect for the project, which
is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2004, is CUH2A Inc. of
Atlanta.
The new lab will house more than 450 scientific personnel in an
11-story, 370,000-square-foot structure with an attached five-story
facility for specialized equipment labs. The laboratories will include
Biosafety Levels 2, 3 and 4, with Level 4 labs requiring the highest
containment precautions. The Emerging Infectious Disease Laboratory
will double the CDC’s existing Level 4 capacity and will be one
of only five such high-containment labs in North America.

The $13.6
million, 80,000-square-foot headquarters features an open
office layout, positioning employee groups closest to those
with whom they most frequently interact. The traditional lobby
has been transformed into a concierge-hosted Town Center,
which links the private reception entrances to the three tenants
and their 300-plus employees.
Private meeting areas and high-tech project coordination rooms
are centered on each floor, equipped with videoconferencing
and satellite hookups to support communication with clients,
job sites and field offices. Larger planning rooms are equipped
with document cameras to project detailed construction plans
on 100-inch screens, expected to optimize meetings with subcontractors
and architects.
Joining McEagle and general contractor Paric on the project
team were Suttle-Mindlin, architect/project designer; ACI/Boland,
collaborating architect; Alper Audi Inc., structural engineer;
Cole & Associates, civil engineer; Loomis Associates, landscape
architect; Murphy Co., mechanical system; Kyhl Co., plumbing
system; PayneCrest Electric Co., electrical system; and Fire
Protection Services Inc., fire protection system. |
