Northwestern Mutual Agent Named Exceptional Volunteer
The Northwestern Mutual Foundation has named St. Louis General Agent
Edward Hempstead the top winner in its national Community
Service Award program. The annual competition, open to more than
7,500 Representatives of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network,
recognizes exemplary volunteer involvement and dedication to charitable
organizations and philanthropic projects.
As the program’s “Most Exceptional Volunteer,” Hempstead is being
honored for his fund development accomplishments and continued hands-on
involvement with Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. In honor
of Hempstead’s achievement, a $25,000 check will be presented to
the organization.
In addition to Hempstead, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation recognized
19 “Outstanding Volunteers,” who each will be honored with a $10,000
grant to the non-profit organizations they serve. In total, Northwestern
Mutual will donate $215,000 this year to community service organizations
through this program.
Hempstead first became involved with Cardinal Glennon when his own
daughter needed emergency care. He was very impressed when he saw
the attention they gave his daughter and the other children. A few
years later, the hospital asked if he would help raise money. Hempstead
lent his vision and commitment to help raise in excess of one million
dollars throughout his 14 years of serving on the Board of Governors.
Now in its seventh year, the Community Service Award is open to
any full-time Financial Representative who is actively involved
in a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Representatives may submit
entries themselves or be nominated by another colleague. A panel
of judges selects the winners based on their commitment, dedication
and hands-on volunteer involvement. The program is funded by the
Northwestern Mutual Foundation, which has contributed more than
$40 million to community betterment in the past five years, both
