FAST 50 newcomer, Access US began in late 1995 when two classmates
at Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Business
developed a business plan to start an Internet Service Provider.
Victor Mattison, president & chairman, and Rob Semaan, CEO, took
their plan to a St. Louis software developer and launched the company
locally.
Growing rapidly through approximately a dozen acquisitions, Access
boasts 35,000 subscribers throughout the region and more than 100
employees. The company has expanded beyond the ISP market by acquiring
Habañero, a web development firm, and Influence, a marketing, communications,
public relations and branding company. Semaan believes the company’s
success can be attributed to the dedicated employees as well as
other opportunities that have helped the company grow. Semaan expects
Access US/Habañero to have more than 50,000 subscribers and 150
employees a year from now. The company recently bought subscribers
from MPower, expanding Access/Habañero’s presence in Missouri, Illinois,
Kansas and Oklahoma and solidifying its position as the region’s
largest, local ISP.

Greg Sullivan, president & CEO, says his company has stayed on the
FAST 50 list for the last six years, because it has been able to
remain one step ahead of the Internet revolution. “When the Internet
hit, clients wanted e-mail applications, then they wanted web pages

he says. G. A. Sullivan has stayed on top of the latest web-based
technology and offered the solutions clients demand, he states.
The company is currently anticipating the launch of Microsoft’s
.NET this fall.
The slowdown in the economy hasn’t worried Sullivan. He believes
the shakeout in the industry means fewer competitors. “When the
economic turnaround happens, it will affect us positively. I can’t
ever remember feeling more excited and optimistic for the future,”
he notes. Sullivan also expects to make the list for the seventh

Heinz noticed there wasn’t a company in the metro area focusing
on the telecommunications industry. So, he quit his job and started

has approximately 35 employees. Heinz builds tower sites for the
cellular industry and designs and installs in-building wireless
systems. One of the company’s specialties is “stealth” towers. On
one project, the company incorporated cellular antennas on top of
light poles installed at a municipal ballfield. A recent in-building
project was Busch Stadium, where Heinz installed a system in offices
and locker rooms to improve cellular coverage. Cellular clients
include Nextel, Cingular, LGC Wireless, Sprint PCS, AT&T Wireless,
Verizon and Voice Stream. “We’re the only construction services

On the FAST 50 list for the second year, Interlock Resources offers
program management office services and staff augmentation to clients
throughout the metro area. The company works with clients to create
proprietary software that solves the client’s business problem.
Wayne Haar says having the IT savvy is important, but “being focused
on the people-side of technology makes this a relationship business
more than a pure IT
business.” Strong relationships with our clients and our consulting
staff, he says, have helped the company manage the economic slowdown
with relative ease. Haar says the shake out in the IT staffing business
with bankruptcies, mergers and acquisitions will benefit Interlock
when the economy recovers. “We’ve been focusing on employee retention,
keeping our overhead in line and maintaining our client relationships
during this downturn,” Haar notes. He says the company will be ready
when clients resume their IT projects.
Interlock services clients in numerous industries such as insurance,
manufacturing, health care, retail, transportation and financial
services. Interlock ranked as the second-fastest growing company
last year on the FAST 50.
