EDC of St. Charles County Garners State, Regional and National Recognition for Economic Development Successes

The Economic Development Center (EDC) of St. Charles County has recently received recognition on a national, state and regional basis for a variety of programs, all of which are designed to help build jobs in St. Charles County.

The Council for Development Finance Agencies (CDFA) has awarded the EDC the Program Excellence Award for its contribution to the field of economic development finance. The recognition came as a result of the “mini-bond” program used to help finance the purchase of St. Louis Embroidery, a longtime St. Charles City business. The nomination for this project touted the partnership of the City of St. Charles, the Industrial Development Authority and Enterprise Bank in helping save the company from closing and retaining 50 jobs for county residents. Industrial revenue bonds are available for manufacturers and non-profits to fund expansion and acquisition of capital improvements for their companies.

“Given that our program was evaluated against financing programs from across the country, we are extremely honored and proud to receive this award,” says Mark Diliberto, senior lender for the organization.

On a statewide level, the EDC and its partners received the Economic Development Marketer of the Year award for the coordinated marketing effort within the region to bring successes such as MasterCard International, McLeod USA, Coca-Cola and MCI WorldCom to St. Charles County. The EDC uses a quarterly newsletter, monthly electronic newsletter, monthly direct mail pieces, video and special news articles to build and strengthen relationships with contacts in targeted industries, site selectors and developers.

Greg Prestemon, president of the EDC, accepted the award and recognized the teamwork among the professional developers working for St. Charles, St. Peters, O’Fallon, Lake Saint Louis, Weldon Spring and Wentzville, as well as St. Charles County and the Metro Network at the regional level. “It is my pleasure to accept this award on behalf of all the local governments that are working hard at economic development. We are also deeply appreciative of the contribution of GTE in helping to appropriately market St. Charles County as ‘Missouri’s Technology Triangle.’”

Finally, the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) recognized the EDC as one of the Top Ten SBA Lenders for Eastern Missouri for 1999. The presentation acknowledged the EDC for its efforts on behalf of the small business community and the SBA 504 Loan program. In fiscal year 1999, the EDC approved 15 loans, representing $5.5 million to small businesses in St. Charles, Lincoln, Warren and Franklin counties.

In support of the technological growth underway in the St. Louis region, Haas Automation, Inc., a technology leader and the largest manufacturer of American-made machine tools, has opened a Haas Factory Outlet in Maryland Heights.

Haas Automation, Inc., which has traditionally sold its products through a network of distributors, has developed a new channel of independently owned and operated Haas Factory Outlets. This new distribution concept enables Haas Factory Outlet customers, including mold making operations, automotive suppliers, the aerospace industry and many other metalworking industries, to benefit from a local supply of spate parts, factory certified service technicians, local training and state-of-the-art demonstration facilities.

With the opening of the St. Louis location, the company now manages a network of more than 30 Haas Factory Outlets across the United States. The company employs more than 800 people nationwide.

“We are excited to increase our presence in the St. Louis area and are dedicated to contributing to our new community by creating jobs and bringing new resources and growth to the region,” says Ken Carse, general manager of Haas Factory Outlet–St. Louis, a division of Nymat Machine Tool Corp.

AMC’s Annual Walk Raises Money and Awareness of Breast Cancer

The goal of the ninth annual AMC’s Walks for Women, which is scheduled for October 8, is to raise awareness to encourage early detection and money to fund important research in the prevention and control of breast cancer. The event, co-chaired by Lisa Walbrandt and Lyn Hawkins, provides an opportunity for people to come together and rally against the deadly disease, which strikes one out of every eight women.

In 1992, AMC’s Walks for Women started with 155 walkers; last October more than 2,000 walkers joined the effort, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for breast cancer research. The money raised through sponsorships goes directly to breast cancer prevention and research initiatives in St. Louis and throughout the country.

One-, three- and five-mile routes start at Fontbonne College, in Clayton, or Our Lady of the Snows, in Belleville, Ill. Women, men, children, individual walkers, groups and corporate teams are invited to join and solicit donations to sponsor them on the walk.
