THE MONTHLY TECHNOLOGY COLUMN
Featuring Timely Tech Trends, Tips and Updates

When you accept the Nobel Prize, allow us the honor of saying, “We knew him/her when...”

Hired a new CIO? Let us know about it. Landed a research grant? Don’t keep it to yourself. Found a cure for the common cold? We’re all ears.

We’re looking for a few good bits, bytes and blurbs about technological developments for this new monthly column. Items need not be biotech-related, though we surmise that many will be, considering our region has been dubbed the BioBelt.

SLCC’s Advanced Network Training Center (ANTC) Preps Learners for IT Advances

Designing, building and maintaining networks is the responsibility of skilled network technicians. The Advanced Network Training Center (ANTC) at St. Louis Community College-Forest Park has evolved into a powerful resource for individuals and organizations seeking competency-based education in creating and supporting computer networking and communications technologies.

Instructors use real-world situations in the classroom in training students to design, operate and maintain networks that serve a variety of communications needs. Classrooms are set up so students can work individually or in small groups.

In recent years, more than 140 students have earned degrees or certificates as network administrators and computer network specialists. Graduates are employed by Schnucks, AT&T, Enterprise Leasing, and area educational institutions.

SLCC-Forest Park was one of the state’s first certified Regional Cisco Networking Academies in 1997; today, there are four regional academies. Those who complete the stringent curriculum are eligible to earn Cisco Certified Network Associate, Cisco Certified Network Professional, Cisco Wireless and Cisco Security certification. Nearly 300 students enrolled for Cisco training last year.

St. Anthony’s Offers New Technology to Treat Sleep Apnea

St. Anthony’s Medical Center’s Sleep Disorder Center recently acquired new technology to treat severe forms of sleep apnea. The bi-level pressure machine, an adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) device, is designed to regulate breathing patterns.

St. Anthony’s lab is the only one in the Midwest to have the ASV machine, recently approved for use in the United States.

Sleep apnea sufferers stop breathing, from a few seconds to a full minute, from a few times an hour to hundreds of times a night.

With the ASV machine, the patient wears a mask that covers the nose and mouth and is attached by a long, flexible hose to the machine. The pressure machine senses the person’s breathing pattern, then automatically adjusts the pressure up or down to help keep the breathing pattern stable.
