INVESTING IN THE REGION

By Debra Solomon Baker

Alex Martignago

managing director,
Computer Sciences Corporation

Alex Martignago, managing director of Computer Sciences Corpor-ation, remembers technology back in the 1970s, when producing even a simple report was a monumental ordeal.

Since those graduate school days, he has witnessed a rate of change in information technology that has been, in many ways, beyond compare.

However, one important constant throughout the years has been Martignago’s determination to make his clients successful. He has, after all, been doing just that for three decades.

“With the size of our community, if I were helping [clients] to not succeed, then I would have had to have moved out of town a long time ago,” says Martignago, a veteran consultant with Ernst & Young who joined CSC four years ago.

CSC, a $15 billion global IT services company with 79,000 employees, provides customers in industry and government with solutions crafted to meet their specific challenges. Headquartered in El Segundo, Calif., CSC reported revenue of $14.6 billion in 2006.

Locally, CSC has five locations and employs 600 individuals who oversee such clients as Boeing and Ascension Health, the nation’s largest nonprofit health system.

In 2003, CSC signed a six-year contract to provide mainframe computing operations services to Boeing and a seven-year, $200 million IT outsourcing contract with Ascension Health.

In fact, during the past four years, Martignago has seen his local business double, and he expects to continue on that pace.

“Technology is such a significant part of whether a business is behind or ahead of its competition,” Martignago says.

With so many options available, why would a company choose CSC for its IT needs?

“We are not a company that makes computers…we implement software that someone else develops, so we can be open-minded and focus on producing results,” says Martignago.

Outside of his professional role, Martignago has also helped “produce results” in his community. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the Develop-ment Committee for SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

His two daughters both graduated from Visitation Academy, where he served as president of the Father’s Club. The oldest one has followed in her father’s footsteps, choosing consulting as her career path.

“I feel that consulting has been a very rewarding career,” Martignago says. “There’s a lot of variety. When stressful times do come up, I draw on experience.”

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE INSIGHTS

If you only had one day to show St. Louis to an out-of-town guest, which place(s) would you take him or her?

“What makes St. Louis so desirable is the incredible number of ways one may spend an enjoyable day on the town. I would escort my guest to the natural splendor of Forest Park and the Botanical Garden, while finding time to work in the wonders of the St. Louis Zoo. Dinner and ambience at one of the many fine, downtown restaurants would be a fitting end to the perfect day.”

Chris Strobbe
Vice President and General Manager,
President Casinos Inc.

“I would start with a tour of Forest Park, stopping at the Art Museum and the Grand Basin. Then we would take a drive down Lindell and through the Central West End, with lunch at Duffs. I’d finish the day with a trip to the Missouri Botanical Garden to see the Chihuly exhibit.”

Nancy Garvey
Vice President–General Manager,
Cingular Wireless-Greater Midwest Region

“My one day visit itinerary always starts with a driving tour to see the beautiful old homes and architecture around the Central West End; winds through our jewel—Forest Park—allowing a choice of one or two of the many venues housed in the Park; moves onto the Missouri Botanical where we stroll through my personal favorite— the Japanese Garden; includes a dining experience on the Hill or at a West End restaurant followed by a show at the Fox or a symphony performance at Powell Hall; and culminates with a restful sleep at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel.”
