COMMUNITY COLLEGE NAMES BANKS VP OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS


MICHAEL BANKS

St. Charles Community College

Michael Banks, who has served as dean of the Arts and Humanities Division at St. Charles Community College since 1994, has been appointed as vice president for academic affairs. Banks succeeds former vice president Dan Larson, who was recently named vice president for instruction at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, N.Y.

In this new position, Banks supervises five division deans, 75 full-time faculty members, 270 adjunct faculty, and nine staff members. During his nine years at SCC, Banks has led the Arts and Humanities Division and has overseen the operation of the Donald D. Shook Fine Arts Building, the facility where the college’s theater performances and many other cultural events are held.

Prior to joining SCC, Banks served as the director of performing arts at Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio, and as the theater department chair at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

WAGNER TO SERVE ON IRS OVERSIGHT BOARD


The U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed the appointment of Raymond Wagner Jr., (center) legal and legislative vice president of Enterprise Rent-A-Car to the IRS Oversight Board. Treasury Secretary John Snow (left) conducted the swearing-in ceremony, which was also attended by Attorney General John Ashcroft and Wagner’s wife Ann. Ray is an active leader in the region’s public policy efforts and a member of the Greater St. Louis Economic Development Council.

SSM Health Care has named Kris Zimmer as senior vice president/chief financial officer. Most recently, Zimmer served as senior vice president and chief financial officer at Norton Healthcare in Louisville, Ky. Also, he has served in similar positions at Mount Carmel Health System and St. Ann’s Hospital, both in Columbus.

Laura Herring, president, CEO and founder of The IMPACT Group, has been selected as a protégé for the Committee of 200’s (C200) Growing Entrepreneurs Mentoring Program.

The program helps women entrepreneurs whose businesses gross between $3 and $10 million to take their businesses to the next level. Herring was one of eight women in the U.S. chosen as a protégé for 2003.

GRACE HILL SETTLEMENT HOUSE WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT


THERESA MAYBERRY-DUNN, PH.D.

The 100-year-old Grace Hill Settlement House (GHSH) has selected Theresa Mayberry-Dunn, Ph.D., as the next president and CEO. She succeeds Rodney Wead, Ph.D, who retired at the end of May 2003.

Most recently, she served as the Director of Early Care Education, Caroline and Sigmund Schott Foundation & Schott Center for Public and Early Education, Boston. Prior to earning her Ph.D. from the Jane Adams School of Social Work at the University of Illinois, Chicago, Dr. Mayberry-Dunn was the ceo of the Center For New Horizons Inc. in Chicago.

Her other accomplishments include establishing the first TANF training program for research reviewers in the country, opening the first HIV emergency infant care centers in Metropolitan Chicago, managing Illinois’ first Fatality Review Board for infants and children, reducing the number of children waiting for adoptive placement from 3,000 to 200 in three years in Cook County, Ill., reducing the deficits of two organizations by $4 million and $2 million.

The GHSH organization, with a $30,000,000 operating budget, yearly serves 100,000 disadvantaged individuals throughout the Greater St. Louis Region, through neighborhood organization, six public health clinics, Head Start, Business Development and a nationally and internationally renowned and copied self-help system entitled the Member Organized Resource Exchange.

LAW FIRM ADDS NEW PARTNER TO LAUNCH MUNICIPAL FINANCE PRACTICE

Attorney John Brickler has joined the law firm of Spencer Fane Britt & Browne LLP as a partner and head of a new municipal finance practice area in the firm’s St. Louis office.

Brickler brings experience as counsel on more than $630 million in tax-exempt bond financing to the firm, which has more than 120 attorneys at its offices in St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo., and Overland Park, Kan.

Prior to joining Spencer Fane, Brickler practiced for 30 years with another major midwestern law firm, including serving as a partner since 1979.


PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL COSMOS PRIZE GOES TO PETER RAVEN

Missouri Botanical Garden Director Dr. Peter Raven received the Expo ’90 Foundation of Japan’s 2003 International Cosmos Prize. This prestigious prize, which will be awarded to Dr. Raven in October, includes a monetary award of 40 million yen, or approximately $340,000.

The Cosmos Prize is given annually to an individual or group who embodies the spirit of the International Garden and Greenery Exposition held in Osaka, Japan, in 1990. Raven’s work over the past 40 years has promoted biological diversity, international cooperation and conservation of the natural world.

Previous Cosmos Prize recipients include the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos Islands (2002), filmmaker and naturalist Sir David Attenborough (2000), and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins (1997).

VATTEROTT COLLEGE APOINTS CEO

Mark DeFusco, Ph.D., has joined Vatterott College as president and CEO. Dr. DeFusco brings 20 years of experience for-profit and post-secondary education, most recently with the Apollo Group as a vice president developing centers for University of Phoenix.

“Our decision to place an executive of Mark’s caliber in the leadership role at Vatterott is based on the very positive perspective that we have regarding the for-profit, post-secondary sector and our desire to pursue growth and value creation,” said William Dawson Jr., partner at Wellspring Capital Management, LLC, the private equity investment firm that owns St. Louis-based Vatterott College.

FRONTENAC BANK APPOINTS CHARIMAN OF ST. CHARLES ADVISORY BOARD

Frontenac Bank has appointed Keith Hazelwood to chair its newly developed St. Charles Advisory Board of Directors. Hazelwood practices corporate law with Hazelwood & Weber, LLC.

The bank will be opening its third location in late fall of 2003 at the intersection of W. Clay and Duchesne/Hawk’s Nest. Frontenac Bank’s other two locations are in Earth City and Frontenac. Rocco Russo Jr., senior vice president of Frontenac Bank, will be responsible for commercial development for the facility.
