BIO-IT WORLD 2003 PRESENTS AWARD TO SOLUTIA PHARMACEUTICAL SERVICES

Solutia’s Pharmaceutical Services Division (Solutia PSD) was named the winner of the Bio-IT World 2003 Best Practices Award, for its fully integrated API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) project management system that monitors all project resources: human, capital and material. Bio-IT World’s Best Practices Awards program is the first to recognize research and development teams within life sciences organizations for innovative uses of life science equipment and information. In addition to Solutia PSD, two other grand-prize winners included Baylor College of Medicine and Millennium Pharmaceuticals.

“This award recognizes Solutia PSD’s outstanding commitment to leveraging information-based technologies to establish best practices, and help speed the drug discovery pipeline,” said Dr. Kevin Davies, editor in chief, Bio-IT World magazine. “This year’s winners are setting the pace in the bio-IT industry for the efficient, cost-effective develop- ment and delivery of potentially life saving therapeutics and diagnostics. We applaud your efforts.”

A peer-review panel of 10 judges reviewed more than 50 submissions from organizations ranging from large pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, to academic institutions, detailing best practices in one of three categories: Discovery and Development, Clinical Trials, and Drug Manufacturing. The judges applied several criteria to make their decisions, such as innovation, process and industry impact. Recognition was given to work that has been done within the last two years.

COMMERCE DEPARTMENT HONORS CENTER FOR EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

David Sampson, assistant secretary for Economic Development, presents the U.S. Commerce Department’s 2003 Technology-led Excellence in Economic Development Award to Missouri’s Center for Emerging Technologies (CET). The Center for Emerging Technologies (CET) has earned the U.S. Commerce Department’s 2003 Technology-led Excellence in Economic Development Award.

The Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) presents this award, which is one of several categories of economic development approaches to earn awards each year. Nominations for EDA’s Excellence Awards are made in specific categories and a selection panel appointed by the Assistant Secretary for Economic Development evaluates all nominees. EDA also serves as a venture capital resource in distressed communities, partnering with local government and nonprofit organization to address challenging conditions such as persistent unemployment and poverty.

“The winners of EDA’s Excellence Awards represent the best and brightest economic development methods and practices in use today,” said David Sampson, assistant secretary for Economic Development. “Their commitment to sound, research-based, market-driven economic development is helping America’s communities grow their economies and create jobs.”

Established in 1996, CET is a not-for- profit organization, which serves as a catalyst for positioning the St. Louis region as a global center for life science and other advanced technology companies. CET operates a business incubator for start-up companies and provides entrepreneur training for tenant companies. Initially sponsored by the University of Missouri– St. Louis and the Missouri Department of Economic Development, CET continues to target technically innovative enterprises in fields such as biomedicine.
