Every equation has at least two sides.

The employment equation has on one side talented employees seeking meaningful, rewarding work to do. On the other side, important work seeks talented employees to do it. Putting them together equals a growing and vigorous regional economy.

The St. Louis Community College is an honest broker on both sides of this equation. Working in concert with business and others interests, the community college excels at preparing students for better paying jobs. And it excels at providing well-trained and highly qualified candidates who meet the demands and standards of both employers and four-year institutions in the region.

Dr. Henry Shannon joined the college more than two decades ago. He assumed the top spot in 2000, still a young man. This month’s cover story explores Dr. Shannon’s career and his commitment to the students, the college and the region.

One reflection of St. Louis Community College’s impact is the community’s widespread experience with it. Dr. Shannon told our writer Kevin Kipp that at least one member of half the families in the St. Louis metropolitan area has taken at least one course at the school.

Among the particularly telling numbers in the story, Jim Miller, managing director of Wyeth BioPharma, says SLCC grads join his firm at annual salaries as high as $60,000.

Numbers also illuminate the story at Clayco Construction. The St. Louis-based firm is currently working on projects in 25 cities across the United States. This year they will deliver more than 16 million square feet of new construction. Since 1990, Clayco has completed more than 60 million square feet of design/build construction. And since its founding in 1984, they have put up more than 500 buildings.

In this month’s profile, writer Pam Droog takes a tilt at capturing the character of Clayco’s founder, Bob Clark. It turns out that Bob had considered a career in architecture before determining that he preferred the economic prospects of owning the construction company that hired the architects.

Clayco’s projects include some of the most recognizable structures in the region, including the campus expansion at Mary Institute and Country Day School, the rehab of the Busch Student Center at SLU, the Plaza in Clayton, several buildings in CityPlace in Creve Coeur, the CitiMortgage headquarters building in O’Fallon, Mo., and the wavy-roofed Daniel & Henry Company building at the Highlands on the former Arena site.

In other stories, read about the region’s hospital building boom, trends in medical malpractice insurance rates and how the region’s leaders are working to keep manufacturing the key driver that it historically has been.

As always, we welcome your feedback on this issue of St. Louis Commerce Magazine and invite your suggestions for future story ideas.
