NEW ST. LOUIS PRODUCT TAKES TOP DESIGN HONORS

One of the 41 Gold Awards in the 2002 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) competition went to a St. Louis-invented medical device called the I.V. House UltraDressing™ making it one of the best and hottest designs of the year. The annual IDEA program is co-sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and BusinessWeek. The BusinessWeek IDEA report hit the stands July 1st. A complete list of winners can be found at www.businessweek.com.

“If you’ve ever worn an IV you know that snagging it on clothing or furniture is pretty common and usually requires a painful restart,” says Betty Rozier, President of I.V. House, Inc. “But the I.V. House UltraDressing™ shields both the IV catheter and the attached looped tubing, greatly reducing any chances of dislodgment.” It attaches via a tape-free, re-sealable fabric “glove” that adapts to fit either hand.

“Before I.V. House, nurses would often protect IV sites by fashioning makeshift devices from medicine or specimen cups,” says Lisa Vallino, a former pediatric ER nurse at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and vice-president/ clinical director of I.V. House, Inc. “I knew that a piece of standard equipment for IV site protection could save nurses time and save hospitals money by preventing costly restarts—not to mention sparing patients the trauma of additional needle-sticks, a critical issue for children and the elderly.”

Vallino and her mother, Betty Rozier, co-inventor and business partner, have been working on the design of the IV House UltraDressing™ for the last six years. The I.V. House UltraDressing™ is now available.

“The Gold IDEA is the ‘academy award’ of design,” says Bryce Rutter, Ph.D., one of the world’s experts in handheld design and founder and CEO of Metaphase Design Group, Clayton, Mo. Rutter led the team that finalized the design for the new I.V. House UltraDressing™ and shares the award with I.V. House. “To win a Gold IDEA for a product that helps people, makes this honor even more profound.” Rutter’s Metaphase Group also won Gold for a chair design.

“The I.V. House is a very elegant solution to a very old problem. It’s one of those designs that makes you wonder why nobody thought of it before,” notes Stephen B. Wilcox, Ph.D. and Fellow of the IDSA.

“Not all Gold winners are the sleekest and slickest designs,” says IDSA Juror, Andy Diaz-Hope. “We look at all aspects of an entry to gauge its looks and functionality before we even consider it for an award. The product won’t win an award just because it looks good. The product has to function or create a needed functionality better than any of its predecessors. Any product that won, essentially, raised the bar of excellence for that category.”

Four St. Louis area firms snagged a place on BusinessWeek’s listing of top 100 Hot Growth Companies:
  • Engineered Support Systems (ESS) — #52
  • Right Management Consultants (based in Pa. with offices in St. Louis) — #61
  • Young Innovations — #75
  • Argosy Gaming Company — #83
To build their annual Hot Growth list, BusinessWeek looks at public companies with sales between $50 million and $1.5 billion. For consideration, companies must have a stock price of more than $5 as well as a market cap greater than $25 million. Rankings are based on sales and earnings growth and average return on capital. BusinessWeek looks at those numbers over the past three years and eliminates any with recent declines in financial results or whose stock price has under- performed the Standard & Poor’s Industrials over the past year and year to date.

Results are based on data gathered through May 9, 2002, and the Hot Growth Companies listing appeared in BusinessWeek’s June 10th issue.
