Providing planning,
architecture, interior design and workplace strategies, Arcturis
has proven its adaptability under the leadership of CEO Patricia
Whitaker. The award-winning architectural and interior design firm
is featured on this month’s cover.
Many area companies have witnessed Arcturis’ talent firsthand, such
as Edward Jones, Commerce Bank, Energizer, Enterprise Rent-A-Car,
Nestlé Purina PetCare, The Private Bank, Pharmacia and Solutia Inc.—just
to name a few.
And they have changed the face of the region with their work on
projects such as the City of O’Fallon Public Safety Complex, Paylinx
Corporate headquarters, The PrivateBank Corporate headquarters,
The Missouri Department of Transportation St. Louis Traffic Information
Center, and MCI WorldCom Contact Center.
In addition to their client work, the firm is committed to strengthening
the community through its philanthropic service.
Also profiled this month is Rich McClure, president and chief operating
officer of UniGroup, Inc. since April. He succeeds Bob Baer, now
president emeritus of UniGroup, the parent company of United Van
Lines and Mayflower Transit. McClure has been on the UniGroup management
team since 1995.
Prior to working in the private sector, McClure worked in government,
most notably from 1985 to 1992 as Missouri’s then-Governor John
Ashcroft’s chief of staff.
Together, United Van Lines and Mayflower Transit boast $1.65 billion
in revenue and an industry-leading 34 percent market share of their
industry.
In other St. Louis Commerce news, an article by Peter Downs
entitled Sidestepping the Coming Labor Shortage, outlines
what the construction industry is doing to attract new people. One
of the programs that has been established to help this industry
compete for talent is the Construction Careers Center, a partnership
with the local Associated General Contractors. This unique charter
school’s curriculum focuses on construction and promises graduates
entry in an apprenticeship program.
The school has garnered national attention, most notably in an article
that appeared in the May 28th edition of The Wall Street Journal.
The article noted that the school, which is in its second year,
enrolled about 90 students last year and that 270 students applied
to join this year—a positive indicator of the school’s success.
