American Eagle Credit Union (AECU), a division of Anheuser-Busch Employees’ Credit Union, has opened in south St. Louis at 2101 South Jefferson. AECU serves the residents and employees of the 63104 ZIP code, which includes neighborhoods such as Soulard, Compton Heights, Lafayette Square, as well as the Eads and Fox Park communities.

“The community leaders were excited when we proposed the idea of opening the credit union,” says Dave Osborn, AECU president and CEO. “Credit unions have always had a long tradition of getting involved in their communities. We are equally excited to open our doors. The area is in the midst of rebuilding, and the community itself is revitalized.”

SLU KICKS OFF $300 MILLION CAMPAIGN

Saint Louis University has launched the largest fund-raising effort in its 184-year history—“The Campaign for Saint Louis University: Where Knowledge Touches Lives.” The Catholic, Jesuit University launched the five-year, $300 million campaign at an evening celebration at Grant’s Farm.

The campaign kick-off event featured entertainment by Grammy award-winner Tim McGraw, with broadcaster Bob Costas serving as master of ceremonies. Campaign co-chairmen and SLU alumni August A. Busch IV and John K. (Jack) Pruellage helped SLU President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., deliver the announcement to approximately 600 alumni and friends of the University. Effective July 1, August Busch IV became president of Anheuser-Busch Inc., heading the company’s domestic beer operations. Pruellage is chairman of Lewis, Rice & Fingersh L.C., a regional law firm based in St. Louis for more than 90 years.

The University has already raised 50 percent of its goal, or $150 million, during the silent phase of the campaign. A leadership gift from John Cook, University alumnus and trustee, helped to double the size of SLU’s business school, which now bears his name. Cook is chairman and chief executive officer of Atlanta-based The Profit Recovery Group International, Inc.

Also, a leadership gift from the Anheuser-Busch Foundation will help renovate Busch Memorial Center into a modern student-alumni center. Anheuser-Busch, under the leadership of the late August (Gussie) Busch, Jr., provided the lead gift for the original facility built in 1967.

One third of the $300 million goal of the new campaign is slated for scholarships and fellowships. Approximately $75 million will go to named endowed chairs and faculty development. The University has set a goal of $50 million for science and technology, which is also a major focus of the campaign. Support in this area will partially fund a new research building, information technology infrastructure, and scientific laboratories and equipment. Another $30 million will be earmarked for additional support for existing centers of excellence at the University, such as the Saint Louis University Cancer Center (which opened this spring), the Paul C. Reinert, S.J., Center for Teaching Excellence, the Boeing Institute of International Business, and others.

“For many years, Anheuser-Busch, as well as our family, have been firmly committed to helping Saint Louis University become the top Catholic university in the U.S., and we’re proud to once again provide support for the school, its faculty and the students,” says August Busch IV, who earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master’s degree in business administration from SLU.
