United Way Leader Will Be Missed
The community mourns the loss of Charmaine Chapman, who
led the United Way of Greater St. Louis to some of its largest
fund-raising successes. Chapman died of cancer in July.
She had been a United Way executive for more than three
decades, serving as president and CEO of the Greater St.
Louis organization since 1994.
Chapman began her profession of making a difference
in the lives of others as a social worker in her native
Pittsburgh, where she later started her United Way career.
She came to St. Louis after heading the United Way in St.
Paul, Minn. Prior to that Chapman held United Way leadership
positions in Alexandria, Va., and Dayton, Ohio. In coming
to St. Louis, Chapman became the first woman and first African
American to lead the United Way here.
Remembering Chapman, United Way Board Chairman Craig Schnuck,
chairman of the board and CEO of Schnuck Markets Inc., said,
Through her compassion, energy and love for her work
and for people, Charmaine created a legacy of good that
we know will continue to endure.
