A history of charitable acts and initiatives developed to aid
the community is the cornerstone of the ongoing legacy of Dr.
Donald M. Suggs, president and publisher of the St. Louis
American and member of The Regional Business Council. Suggs is
a supporter of many worthy causes and an advocate for positive
change that will improve the quality of life for the community.
He sees the St. Louis American as a vehicle to carry the important
message of the benefits of acting cooperatively to improve the
entire region.
Through the St. Louis American, he challenges the community to
address compelling issues as well as to praise progress. The annual
Salute to Excellence Scholarship Awards Banquet is an example
of a program developed by the St. Louis American to emphasize
the need to improve education. Held this past September, this
annual sold-out event, now in its 13th year, recognized two extraordinary
community leaders and six outstanding educators. “The evening
is always an affirmation of the opportunities open to youngsters
who are prepared for life and a way to honor selected educators
who have helped pave the way,” Suggs comments. Scholarships were
given to deserving students who were continuing their academic
pursuits. Individual achievement awards were presented based on
excellence in education and community service.
Suggs has a wide range of civic interests in addition to his focus
on education. He is the founder and chairman of the African Continuum,
bringing serious non-commercial African American artistic endeavors
to St. Louis, and a founding board member of the Museum of African
Art in New York City. He recently received a gubernatorial appointment
to the Hawthorne Foundation and is a member of the Board of Commissioners
of the St. Louis Science Museum and the Saint Louis Zoo. He is
also the founder of the African American Leadership Giving Initiative
for the United Way of St. Louis and a founding member and current
Board president of the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club. He
is also a member of the St. Louis Black Leadership Roundtable
and the St. Louis RCGA.
