INVESTING IN THE REGION

By Debra Solomon Baker

Scott Bell, vice president,
Global Sales Training Programs Siemens PLM Software

The software industry? Not for Scott Bell. Or so he thought.

Nearly three decades ago, Bell arrived in St. Louis armed with a degree in architecture, prepared to pursue a master’s in business administration.

Then, like so many success stories, his took some sharp turns and he found himself selling software for a small company, which just, flat out, refused to stop growing.

Operating under a new name, Siemens PLM [Product Lifecycle Management] Software is now an estimated $1.3 billion operation, and is the oldest Product Lifecycle Management company in the industry.

A newlywed when he first stepped on board, Bell, vice president, Global Sales Training Programs, has literally grown up with the company.

Siemens PLM Software nurtures products from birth to death, managing all of the information between those two points.

An estimated 40 percent of the world’s products, including all General Motors and Nissan automobiles, Mont Blanc pens, and Dyson vacuums, are designed using the company’s software.

Through the use of robotics, the software allows for digital manufacturing. A simulation of the manufacturing process enables companies to determine where problems may arise.

In addition, digital collaboration enables those working in different parts of the world, such as engineers in Detroit and suppliers in China, to conduct virtual meetings and to better coordinate their efforts.

“All of this software helps companies innovate faster and better,” says Bell. “We have the broadest range of software applications. We’re the only company who ‘does it all.’”

The company has 45,000 customers globally. Its top 100 customers have been so for an average of 18 years, longer than most software companies have been in business.

With his team, Bell develops training strategies and manages the on-line training capabilities.

A dedicated father of three, Bell considers himself fortunate to work for a company where there has “never been a hint that work comes before family.”

He and his wife are heavily involved in the Wildlife Center of Missouri, which serves to rescue and rehabilitate Missouri wildlife.

He has also served on the YMCA Board of West County

“If someone had told me that this little product would be part of a giant software company one day, I would have laughed myself to death,” Bell says.
