Continuing the tradition, the focus of Commerce Magazine this month is on “things built” in the region. In this issue we are proud to announce the annual 2007 Association of General Contractors (AGC) Keystone Awards; you will find these on pages 66 through 77. Congratulations to this year’s Keystone winners!

An important piece of the Construction Roundup section is an industry-roundtable discussion. Commerce Magazine posed questions to Kirk Warden, vice president-Institutional/Educational, Clayco Inc., Patrick Kozeny, president of Kozeny-Wager, Tracy Hart, president of Tarlton Corporation and Bruce Holland, president and CEO, Holland Construction Services. These leaders evaluated regional progress, spoke about obstacles, and forecasted major construction trends.

Continuing with the construction theme, Shera Dalin writes about “Commercial Green” being more than just about money. She takes a look at how St. Louis companies are designing future office space and building eco-friendly homes.

From one end of the region to the other, our local colleges and universities are expanding their campuses with burgeoning construction projects. Bill Beggs takes us on a virtual tour of the various bricks and mortar enhancements that are changing the landscape of these area institutions.

Also, in “Gaming as a Construction Driver” we learn how this industry is creating new entertainment, dining and lodging opportunities, with expansion by national firms Pinnacle, Harrah’s, Ameristar and others regionally. Pinnacle is investing some $1 billion in the region, featuring the near completion of Lumiére Place on Laclede’s Landing downtown and the start of the River City complex in Lemay.

At the same time PRIDE stands proud; this labor/management partnership is creating a variety of opportunities for minority contractors and employees regionally. PRIDE has worked closely with MoDot regarding minority opportunities in the massive I-64/40 project that will become a major focal point of our community in the next two years.

This special construction issue of Commerce Magazine is rounded out with a “Spotlight” on Tracy Hart, a true trailblazer in the male-dominated construction industry. From project engineer to president of the firm, she has guided Tarlton Corporation to new heights.

Our cover story this month by Christine Imbs is a fascinating piece on Charter Com-munications’ CEO Neil Smit; Neil leads the third largest cable company in the U.S. serving more than 5.6 million customers in 29 states.

A relative newcomer to our community, Neil brings a distinguished career of leadership to this Fortune 500 St. Louis-based Headquarter Company. With his undergraduate degree from Duke University, he earned his master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston, and went to work for a foreign policy and military think tank, and then as an executive for Minneapolis-based Pillsbury. Prior to moving to St. Louis, he was a top executive at American Online (AOL) where he led, among other things, the development of MapQuest.

He was recruited to St. Louis by Paul Allen, principal stockholder and chairman of Charter. He is inspiring a financial turnaround of this communications firm, and was recently featured live on CNBC’s “Power Lunch” along with Monsanto’s President Hugh Grant and Ameren Corporation’s Chairman, President and CEO Gary Rainwater.

We hope you enjoy this jam-packed, 124-page issue of Commerce Magazine.
