The November issue of St. Louis Commerce Magazine is a jam packed 116-page issue, focused on “things built.” Starting with our annual Construction Roundup and the Construction Roundtable discussion with leaders in the industry from across the region, we hear about both private and public development projects in the works, including the upcoming $500 million investment in the reconstruction of Highway 40.

The Roundtable discussion is with David Volk of Volk Construction Co., this year's president of the Associated General Contractors; Bob Clark of Clayco Corp., one of our region's most entrepreneurial builders; Pat Sullivan, executive vice president of the Home Builders Association of Greater St. Louis; and Tom Dunne, CEO of Fred Weber Inc., one of our region's top road and bridge builders.

For this month’s cover story, Commerce sat down with Rick Sullivan and John Eilermann, chairman and CEO respectively of McBride & Son Companies, to talk about unique development opportunities, which year's ago would have seemed unfathomable. McBride, which is the largest and one of the most respected homebuilders in Missouri, helped pioneer in-fill development across the St. Louis region. One example is the recently reborn neighborhood, now called Botanical Heights, near the Missouri Botanical Garden. Read why demand was so strong for new homes at Botanical Heights that 30 people camped out overnight and 57 homes were sold the very first day.

Another dimension of “things built” that we take a look at in this month's issue of Commerce is the green movement. The move by architects, designers and developers to build environmentally sustainable buildings has put St. Louis among the top 10 cities in the nation, with the highest number of buildings designed to minimize environmental impact. We also examine buildings designed specially for healthcare and educational communities.

We cap off our annual construction issue with the announcement of the prestigious Keystone Awards. What a great regional tradition this has become. These much sought-after awards are presented annually by the Associated General Contractors.

Keeping with the overall theme of the issue, our spotlight for this month is on Michael Staenberg, president and co-founder of THF Realty. Learn why he named his company THF, which stands for To Have Fun. But it is more than fun. It is also quite profitable.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue of St. Louis Commerce Magazine. As always, please send your comments and suggestions to us at dfleming@stlrcga.org.
