Some $18 billion in construction and development projects are underway and have recently been completed across the St. Louis region. It would be hard not to notice all the activity underway when you travel around the metro area. Therefore, this month’s focus for St. Louis Commerce Magazine is on the construction industry—which provides the region with multi-billions of dollars in economic impact each year.

Our cover story penned by writer Laurie Burstein focuses on Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum. The St. Louis-based architectural firm is not only transforming the terrain in our region, it is shaping the skyline of cities and communites around the globe. High-profile projects designed by HOK in our region range from the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and the Nidus Center for Scientific Enterprise to the Thomas F. Eagleton U.S. Courthouse and East Terminal at Lambert
St. Louis International Airport.

HOK is also well known for designing ballparks, such as Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Coors Field in Denver, and the new Busch Stadium in St. Louis. HOK is having a profound impact on the economy—not just in St. Louis, but around the world. Big projects circling the globe include a new tourist community in India, mixed-use developments in China, and skyscrapers in the Middle East.

Speaking of big projects, through the efforts of the airport’s previous director, Leonard Griggs, and continuing under the new director, Kevin Dolliole, the major expansion project at Lambert is on budget and on schedule to be completed by April 2006. But as Brian R. Hook writes, it’s not just the runway project that is getting noticed. Read how Dolliole is improving the experience for passengers throughout the terminals.

This month’s issue also includes the annual Keystone Awards, presented by the Associated General Contractors of St. Louis. Check out the awards that recognize the best of the many construction projects that were completed in our region this past year. Linda F. Jarrett interviews some of the construction industry’s leaders to get their prognosis for 2006. And find 46 recent projects in Commerce Magazine’s annual Commercial Construction Roundup.

Over the past few years, Commerce has chronicled the major loft housing development underway in downtown. Another dimension that shows the positive momentum underway in residential activity in St. Louis is a high-rise being built in the central city as well. As a story in this month’s issue explains, the Park East Tower in the Central West End will be 26 stories and jut into the sky 320 feet. Also, read about how Art Saint Louis, a dynamic non-profit organization that supports regional artists, is moving its high-tech gallery to Washington Avenue.

Finally, in our spotlight, Christine A. Imbs profiles Paul McKee, chairman and CEO of McEagle Properties. He is not only a highly successful entrepreneur in the construction and development industry, but his civic contributions to the region have been enormous. Read why his advice “don’t run from it, go to it,” applies to both professional and personal life.

We hope you enjoy this issue of St. Louis Commerce. Send your comments and suggestions to us at dfleming@stlrcga.org.
