INVESTING IN THE REGION

By Debra Solomon Baker

DAN FRISBEE
senior vice president,
Walton Construction

Dan Frisbee knows for a construction company to find success, there is plenty of important building that occurs before the concrete is poured. It’s called relationship building—and it’s something Frisbee takes seriously.

Frisbee says he values a workplace where respect and collegiality are paramount, and he has worked hard to help create that environment at Walton Construction, where he serves as senior vice president and St. Louis division director. Frisbee opened the division office two-and-a-half years ago, with Harrah’s 209-room hotel expansion in Maryland Heights as the anchor project.

While Frisbee recognizes that St. Louis has no dearth of strong construction companies, he believes that he and his staff of 26 bring new energy to the business.

“We can make the whole process of construction easier,” says Frisbee, a St. Louis native. “To do that, we have to look at each other and say, ‘How do I make your job easier?’ Then the clients will enjoy working with us.”

Part of that enjoyment stems from having an atypical approach to staff meetings. After Frisbee and his team completed the St. Louis Blues Practice Facility, for example, they opted to hold their monthly meeting right there. They have also been known to hunt out the city’s best chicken wings and to convene meetings at sundry off-campus locales.

Frisbee anticipates his office—one of six divisions Walton Construction maintains—will continue to service the St. Louis area gaming community. He also expects to delve into the developer market and the health care industry.

Meanwhile, Frisbee looks across the landscape of St. Louis and takes pride in the fact that, in his 31 years in the construction industry, he has helped build so much of what he sees.

“I love that, in construction, you know that you have made someone’s life better by what you have done,” Frisbee says. “You have created a facility that people can enjoy—like a hotel—and you can know that people will go there and say, ‘Wow.’”

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE INSIGHTS

What qualities do you admire most in an employee?

“The qualities that I admire most in an employee are dependability and loyalty.”

KENNETH F. TEASDALE
chairman of the firm,
Armstrong Teasdale

“A good employee is generally knowledgeable, hardworking, dependable and responsible. However, the quality I most admire is that of a team player. Employees who put success of their team above personal recognition maximize everyone’s potential.”

JOHN W. ROWE
president and CEO,
Bethesda Health Group

“The qualities I most admire in an employee are some of the basics, including honesty, integrity and commitment.  In the construction industry, new technologies and increasingly complex projects mean that we work in a dynamic, always changing workplace. That’s why I also admire employees that have flexibility, creativity and the willingness to continue to learn and grow. Last, but not least, I enjoy working with people who have a sense of humor, and like to have fun.”

KARL KLOSTER
president, Midwest Division,
