Since 1865, Commerce Bancshares, Inc. has been meeting customers’ financial needs, currently in more than 330 locations in Missouri, Kansas and Illinois. In so doing, they have found their niche as a “super-community bank”—offering the product experience and technology of a mega bank, while providing the personal commitment of a community bank.

Their numbers are impressive. For the quarter ending June 30, 2002:

Total Assets $ 12.3 billion
Total Deposits $ 9.8 billion
Total Loans $ 7.7 billion
Stockholder’s Equity $ 1.368 billion
Net Income $ 50.1 million
Earnings Per Share $ 0.75

At the helm since 1991 is David Kemper, chairman, president and CEO. He joined Commerce Bank in 1978 as Vice President in charge of Commercial Lending. He also is a director of Ralcorp Holdings, Inc. and Tower Properties Company. He’s vice chairman of Washington University, chaired The Greater St. Louis Economic Development Council, runs capital campaigns for the Missouri Botanical Garden and Cardinal Ritter College Prep, and is president-elect of Civic Progress.

This month’s profile, by Pam Droog, features Roger Fritz, founder and president of Leadership By Design, a very unique consulting firm that provides executive coaching, leadership development and strategy resources for individuals, organizations and communities.

Fritz, who founded the firm in 1986, is best known for his innovative work in the development of human potential and his application of the principles of The Aspiring Mind™. Today thousands of professionals and managers in the U.S. and Canada employ the principles of The Aspiring Mind™ to improve their leadership effectiveness within their individual careers and through the organizations and communities they serve.

Also of special interest this month is Tenants’ Market, which offers building tenants advice on how to negotiate better rates, upgrade space or sublease. Of course tenants who have prospects for growth and who might draw other tenants have the most options to explore.

And lastly, this issue of St. Louis Commerce Magazine offers a unique perspective on how to juggle both business and family agendas. High-Tech Mom-and-Pops by William Poe highlights entrepreneurial husband and wife teams running technology firms such as S2Tech, an information technology firm, Rose International, a software development and consulting company, and SyllogisTeks, a software and information technology provider. All of these firms have been recognized in the St. Louis Regional Technology Top 50. S2Tech was a newcomer this year, Rose is a five-time winner and SyllogisTeks earned the distinction in 2001, 2000 and 1999.
