SIUE Undergrads Reach ‘Idea To Product’ Semifinals

Two undergraduate student teams from the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville advanced to the next round of the regional 2008 Idea to Product (I2P) collegiate contest. The contest, held at Saint Louis University, attracted teams comprised primarily of grad students from other area institutions.

I2P encourages the development of innovative early-stage technology commercialization plans that aim for unique product ideas with clear market demand. Teams from SLU, Washington University, University of Illinois and others also participated.

SIUE projects included AmeriBlock, a large-scale, environmentally friendly Lego block for transportation and construction; and the Automatic Prescription Filling System, which employs a robot with a dual gripper.

Wash U. Professor in ‘Thick’ of Europa Ice Discussion

Scientists are all but certain that Jupiter's moon Europa has an ocean underneath its surface ice, but donÕt know how thick this ice might be. New research is bringing scientists closer to determining the distant worldÕs potential for harboring life. At a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, William B. McKinnon, professor of earth and planetary sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, presented some of these recent findings and discussed new opportunities for exploring Europa.

Fleming Pharmaceuticals Strikes Partnership with Hawthorn Pharmaceuticals

Fleming Pharmaceuticals has formed a strategic alliance with Madison, Miss.-based Hawthorn Pharmaceuticals to expand the reach of Fleming's new CaloMist, a once-daily nasal spray for Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Under the agreement, Hawthorn's national sales force will introduce the product into every major U.S. metropolitan market. Capitalizing on Hawthorn's established sales force and mature physician relationships, Fleming will be able to promote CaloMist as an alternative to injections.
