MIDWEST CONSTRUCTION MAGAZINE PICKS TWO PROJECTS BY
S. M. WILSON & CO. FOR 'BEST OF 2007' AWARDS

Two buildings constructed by S. M. Wilson & Co. in the St. Louis area have earned Best of 2007 Awards from Midwest Construction magazine.

The American Power Conversion Technology Center in St. Louis received the Award of Merit in the commercial division. The building houses electronic testing laboratories, classrooms, training areas, demonstration and display areas, and an executive briefing center. The jury commented, "The design will help teams collaborate. The look is clean and sharp. ItÕs a nice overall business project."

The Dr. William D. Purser, DC Center at Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Mo., earned an Award of Merit in the higher education/ research division. The 47,000-square-foot learning center was designed to accommodate a variety of functions held by staff and students each year and features a main auditorium that can hold up to 1,500 people.

The two projects were chosen out of a record-breaking 114 entries
from the four states that Midwest Construction coversÑEastern Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana.

ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR MAGAZINE RECOGNIZES LOCAL ELECTRICAL WORKERS' UNION FOR SAFETY MILESTONE

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 1 was featured in the January 2008 issue of Electrical Contractor magazine for achieving a major safety milestone.

In an effort to reduce electrical-related fatalities on construction sites, all 3,400 of the organizationÕs construction work force journey workers and apprentices earned the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's 10-Hour Safety Certifica-tion. Seventy percent of them also attained OSHA 30-Hour Safety Certification, according to the article. All supervisory personnel received the 30-hour training.

"The fact that most electricians sought the more intense OSHA 30-Hour certification demonstrates their commitment to the highest standards of safety. That kind of dedication is a tremendous asset when it comes to selling St. Louis as a great place to build," said Jim LaMantia, executive director of PRIDE of St. Louis, in the article.

Electrical Contractor magazine is the official publication of the National Electrical Contractors Association.

LAWRENCE GROUP'S DWARS FEATURED IN MIDWEST CONSTRUCTION COVER STORY

David Dwars, director of multifamily housing for architectural design firm Lawrence Group, is one of several local professionals featured in Midwest Construction's February 2008 cover story, "'Meet Me in St. Louis' Means Head Downtown."

The article highlights the resurgence of residential life in downtown St. Louis, including the renovation and restoration of numerous historic buildings into residential loft and office space. Dwars discussed the importance of being sensitive to the uniqueness of each buildingÕs structural elements and maintaining its historical character. He has more than 10 years of experience in architecture and serves on the board of directors for the Landmarks Association of St. Louis.

HOK SENIOR MEDICAL PLANNER SELECTED FOR NATIONAL PUBLICATION'S "40 UNDER 40" LIST

The editors of Building Design + Construction magazine have chosen Kerry Cheung, senior medical planner at architectural firm HOK, as one of 40 rising stars in the design and construction professions for 2008. The 40 Under 40 list appeared in the magazine's Jan. 15 issue.

In her role as senior medical planner, Cheung works directly with executive personnel at major hospital systems to translate their business initiatives into long-term building and campus-development strategies. She manages $2 billion in health care work, according to the magazine's profile.

The editors selected the 40 winners out of 275 entrants from the fields of architecture, interior design, engineering and construction.
