ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR
INSTITUTE FOR RENEWABLE FUELS
ESTABLISHED AT DANFORTH CENTER

Jack and Susan Taylor of Enterprise Rent-A-Car have given a $25 million gift to the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center to create the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Institute for Renewable fuels. The $25 million grant will go towards a team of research scientists who will greatly expand the Danforth Center’s renewable biofuels research programs. These fuels will decrease the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and reduce the current dependency on finite fossil fuels in future years.

“It’s important to all of us at Enterprise that we play a role in the search for ways to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming,” says Andrew C. Taylor, chairman and CEO of Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

This is the second sizable gift the Taylor family has made to the Danforth Center, and it completes the Center’s Campaign for a Green Future, a $100 million campaign launched in 2004 with a $50 million matching grant from the Danforth Foundation. In September 2005, Jack and Susan Taylor gave $10 million to the Center, which was at that time the largest gift to the campaign. The $25 million gift will be matched by the Danforth Foundation, thus completing the initial round of fundraising for the endowment.

In addition, Enterprise also made a $50 million pledge to plant 50 million trees over the next 50 years.

As the nation’s largest car rental company, Enterprises’ fleet totals more than 800,000 cars, with nearly half offering highway fuel economy of 28 miles per gallon. Enterprise also has the world’s largest fleet of FlexFuel vehicles which run on a cleaner-burning blend of corn-based ethanol and gasoline called E85, plus the company has approximately 3,000 hybrids in its fleet.

“For us, supporting biofuels research is about finding acceptable alternatives to finite fossil fuels,” Taylor says. “And it’s about ensuring a steady supply of fuel by finding new ways to create it from renewable and more reliable sources. “

Taylor continued, “At its simplest level, the rental car business comes down to cars and fuel. To remain successful, we need vehicles. We also need an abundant, affordable supply of fuel to power them. The creation of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Institute for Renewable Fuels sends a message that we are committed to finding new energy sources that will sustain not only our business, but also the environment around us for future generations.”
