Located in what was once a Mark Twain Bank, Mike Shannon’s Steak and Seafood restaurant’s new location is an exciting addition not only to the downtown restaurant scene, but an added shot of vitality to the blossoming Ballpark Village District.

With floor-to-ceiling windows fronting two sides of the restaurant, patrons have outstanding views of the downtown skyline and the new ballpark. “We have the best see and be seen tables in the city” says Manager Pat Shannon, daughter of the Cardinals announcer of more than 30 years.

Established by the former St. Louis Cardinals baseball great and sportscaster, Shannon’s was located across Kiener Plaza at Chestnut and 7th Street for more than 20 years, and developed a great following for both its cuisine and its sports memorabilia. Their new home combines the best of the past in a trendier, stream lined and spacious setting.

Designed by the Lawrence Group, the new restaurant’s main dining room includes Shannon’s impressive collection of 352 autographed baseballs housed in an illuminated glass column. Diners seated near the baseball tower will find Hall of Famers Ted Williams, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays among the signers. A two-way granite fireplace in the center of the restaurant adds an elegant touch to the surrounding sports memorabilia.

Shannon’s new high tech bar boasts 12 high definition plasma screens. Needless to say, it has become quite a destination onto itself.

Those looking for more private dining options won’t be disappointed. The restaurant includes small dining rooms named for Cardinal greats Albert Pujols, Bob Gibson and Stan Musial, as well as ‘snugs,’ small intimate dining alcoves which Shannon intends to name after different players each year. This year’s honorees are Chris Carpenter and Jim Edmunds. If you are looking for another truly unique experience, you may want to try dining in the wine vault. Yes, the former Mark Twain bank vault has a new life as an intimate dining room/wine cellar, housing a very impressive wine selection.

Another unique feature of their new location is the exciting outdoor dining options. An elevated terrace on 7th Street provides a great spot for dining or people watching. On the lower level and immediately across from the new Ballpark and Ballpark Village, Shannon’s has opened their new beer garden which accommodates up to 1,000, and already has become the place to be before and after home games.

Those who frequented Mike Shannon’s in its former location will recognize many of their menu favorites. Long time chef, Hugh J. Cartlidge continues to prepare top quality aged steaks and seafood to perfection. On a recent visit, we found the tenderloin filet and prime rib of beef simply superb. Lobster twin tails continue to be a popular seafood selection. Most of their entrées are served a la carte and are priced from $15.95 to $41.95. Generously portioned side dishes, such as fresh asparagus, sautéed mushrooms, onion strings, and mashed potatoes are available for $4.50 to $7.95.

A new addition to their menu is plates with accompaniments. Priced from $19.95 to $35.95, these selections such as Shannon’s mixed grill or lamb chops include slightly smaller portions, but are served with specially selected side dishes.

Those looking for a fine dining lunch experience within an hour will be pleased with their options at Shannon’s. In addition to a great selection of salads and sandwiches, specials—such as strip sirloin, Maryland crab cakes and oriental steamed salmon—are available, and are served with a salad and side dish. Sandwiches start at $7.95 and specials are priced beginning at $10.95.

Shannon’s decadent desserts continue to be superb. Pat Shannon’s personal favorite is the chocolate sin cake—made of semi-sweet and dark chocolate. Priced from $4.95 to $7.95, other dessert favorites include Mike’s upside down apple pie and the chocolate turtle cake.

The new Mike Shannon’s combines a great location, outstanding interior design, and first rate dining in its adjacent to the new Ballpark Village location. As Mike’s longtime broadcast partner Jack Buck would say, “That’s a winner!”
