LAWRENCE GROUP BUYS MARQUETTE BUILDING

The Lawrence Group Architects Inc. has purchased the 19-story Marquette Building on the corner of North Broadway and Olive Street for $4.9 million. The firm will spend about nine months in predevelopment work, then 16 months renovating the 262,000-square-foot building.

Stephen Smith, president of Lawrence Group, says the first floor of the building will be retail; the second floor will house office space; floors three and four will continue to be home to the YMCA; and floors five through 19 will be residential.

The Lawrence Group also owns the 11-story Security Building, on the same block. Smith said rehab work is progressing on the office building. Also, Drury Development is building a 400-car parking garage on the same block. When the block is completed, Smith said the population should be around 200, with nearly 400,000 square feet of mixed-use space.

DOWNTOWN GROCERY STORES TO OPEN DOORS

Two full-service grocery stores are being developed in downtown St. Louis, ending a 20-year drought. In June, developer Craig Heller will open City Grocers, a two-level, 6,100-square-foot store at 920 Olive St. At the same time, the McGowan Brothers Development Corp. plans to launch a 1,500-square-foot market at 1232 Washington Ave.

ALLEGIANT BANK OPENS IN-STORE FACILITY AT GRAVOIS PLAZA SHOP ‘N SAVE

A new in-store Allegiant Bank facility at the Gravois Plaza Shop ‘n Save opened on March 8. “We’re very excited and are sure that customers will enjoy banking at the new facility,” said Nora Amato, senior vice president of marketing at Allegiant. “Allegiant Bank continues to expand, making the bank one of the most accessible in St. Louis.”

$10 MILLION UPGRADE AT ADAM’S MARK ST. LOUIS

The Adam’s Mark St. Louis hotel has launched a $10 million refurbishing program that will make over all 910 guest rooms. The improvements will include new room décor, new bedding, bathroom enhancements, high-speed Internet access, new business desks and ergonomic chairs. The refurbishing program is scheduled to be finished in spring 2005.


Colleen De Reuck, of Boulder, Colo., celebrates after finishing first in the U.S. Olympic marathon trials in St. Louis on April 3. De Reuck, 39, had a time of 2:28:24, and won one of three spots on the U.S. Olympic team.

ARMSTRONG TEASDALE EXPANDS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY PRACTICE TO KANSAS CITY

Armstrong Teasdale LLP is expanding its intellectual property practice to Kansas City, Mo. Evan Sotiriou, an experienced patent attorney with a background in electrical engineering, will lead the expansion of the Kansas City practice. Sotiriou has worked extensively in preparing and prosecuting patent applications and is actively involved in evaluating intellectual property portfolios in mergers and acquisitions.

SAINT LOUIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA MOVES CLOSER TO MEETING TAYLOR FAMILY CHALLENGE

The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra announced that $35 million of the $40 million needed to match the Taylor Family Challenge has been raised. Jack and Susan Taylor, Andrew and Barbara Taylor, and Jo Ann Taylor Kindle pledged $40 million to the Symphony in December 2000, challenging the organization to successfully match that amount by Dec. 31, 2004.


In related fundraising news, the Symphony received a $300,000 annual fund challenge from an anonymous couple who have been devoted Symphony patrons for many years. This Friends of the Symphony challenge is a dollar-for-dollar matching gift designed to encourage new and increased gifts to the Symphony’s annual fund for operating expenses. For every new or increased gift in 2004, this couple will donate an equivalent amount to the Orchestra up to $300,000.
