This month’s
cover story, by Pam Droog, features the ultimate entrepreneurs,
brothers Steve and Mike Roberts. Twenty-five- plus years ago, they
founded The Roberts Companies. Today it is a diversified $460 million,
34-company empire. Holdings range from real estate development to
business consulting, television stations to wireless communications,
aviation to construction...even a gated community in the Bahamas.
Their latest claim to fame is the launch of UPN46 (United Paramount
Network), a new television station locally owned and operated by
Roberts Broadcasting Company. It has been nearly 35 years since
a new broadcast station of this size and magnitude has been launched
in the St. Louis area.
All their activities have brought them to the limelight. They’ve
received attention from national publications such Forbes,
Success and Black Enterprise magazine, which listed
the Roberts’ broadcasting and wireless communications companies
among the largest minority-owned businesses in the United States.
While nurturing and growing their business, they have found time
to contribute to the community, each serving as aldermen (Mike served
from 1977 to 1983 and Steve served from 1979 to 1991). They’ve also
served on the boards of numerous professional and civic organizations.
This month’s profile features Doug Hill who succeeds John Bachmann
as managing partner of Edward Jones next year. Doug’s whole career
has been at Edward Jones, starting in 1968, the day after he completed
his final exams at Kansas State University.
In 1978, Hill moved to St. Louis to start a training program for
brokers. In 1981, Hill established—and headed for the next 16 years—the
sales and marketing department. His responsibilities continued to
expand and now the next stop is the top spot.
In other Commerce news, Kevin Kipp has written an engaging
update on the new St. Charles Convention Center, a $32.5 million,
148,000-square-foot facility—which includes a 300-room Embassy Suites
hotel. It will go up on 21 acres along the south side of Interstate
70. Not only will the new facility create jobs, but it is expected
to be the spark to revitalize a part of town that has been underdeveloped.
Bob Schaper has penned a story on the design and construction of
the region’s nostalgic ballparks—TR Hughes Stadium, home of the
Rascals, GMC Stadium, home of the Grizzlies and the proposed new
stadium for the Cardinals.
Unique architectural design is also the subject of Jeff Dunlap’s
piece on creative spaces for creative people.
Of course there’s much more as well—corporate housing trends, unique
perspectives on luxury living and new-fangled DVDs, which I’ll let
you discover for yourselves. Enjoy. And, as always, I’ll look forward
to your feedback.
