Underway for New Library at Webster University
Above:
Paric Corp. is constructing a new $14 million library on the
campus of Webster University. The technology and communication elements
designed into the library will serve students at the university’s
main campus in Webster Groves as well as the 96 other locations
worldwide.
Paric Corp. has begun construction on its fourth project in the
past two years at Webster University. When completed in spring 2003,
the $14 million library named in honor of Emerson, a long-standing
supporter of the University, will offer students current technology
options for research and communication.
Need for a new library has been growing since the mid-1990s. During
this time, Webster University nearly doubled the number of campus
locations it serves. There are now more than 18,000 students enrolled
in graduate and undergraduate programs through the University’s
97 locations in the U.S. and seven other countries.
Since 1969, Webster University has shared a library with nearby
Eden Seminary. With construction of a new library building on the
Webster campus and renovation of the current library building on
the Eden campus, the joint library system will continue in both
buildings.
The new library is the largest project in the University’s $30 million
comprehensive campaign and will be the largest building on the St.
Louis campus. Designed by Perry, Dean, Rogers & Partners (PDRP),
the 71,500-square-foot building will offer space for books and desks
as well as access to new technology.
Among the library design elements that will accommodate new technology
needs:
- More
than 700 laptop computer data connections
- 30
online, research workstations
- Remote
access to reference books, more than 500 e-books and about
8,000 journals
- Satellite
downlinks to connect the university to its global student
and faculty through remote classroom lectures
- High-speed
communications tied into the university’s fiber optic
computer network.

“Webster’s new
library will be a centerpiece of our academic resources,” says Neil
George, vice president of academic affairs. “This technologically
advanced building will surely become the intellectual center for
our home campus, and it will serve our students throughout the world
of Webster.”
Hotel Opens on SLU Campus
Above:
Each floor of the new Saint Louis University Water Tower Inn
features a lounge with a view of the Arch and downtown.
With spacious guest rooms and views of both downtown St. Louis or
the historic Compton Water Tower and park, the Saint Louis University
Water Tower Inn is not typical campus accommodations. Then again,
not every university operates a hotel. Saint Louis University decided
to open the 62-room hotel on campus as a SLU campus service, but
shortly after opening, the University also decided to make the hotel
available to the general public.
Located near the former Incarnate Word Hospital, now known as the
Salus Center, SLU spent more than $1 million on renovations, which
began in April 2001 and were completed in February 2002. ICS Construction
converted more than 35,000-square-feet on the fifth and sixth floors
of the six-story building into hotel rooms, meeting rooms and lounges.
An additional 1,000 square feet on the main level became the hotel
lobby. Other amenities include a fitness center, a fully-equipped
kitchen, a cafeteria and a mail and copy center.
According to University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., the idea
for the hotel started as a way to fill accommodation needs for SLU
parents, alumni, visiting athletic teams and families of patients
at Saint Louis University Hospital and Cardinal Glennon Children’s
Hospital. Drury Inn provided assistance setting up the Water Tower
Inn. Currently, the Water Tower Inn has a staff of six led by Jeremy
Schierhoff as manager.
Joining ICS on the project was the Lawrence Group architects. Lawrence
Group’s designs converted the six-story former hospital into a multi-use
facility with separate entrances for the hotel and the University’s
School of Public Health.

more than triples the size of Corva’s previous space in Earth City.
ARCO Construction Co. completed the $2 million office/warehouse
