For nine consecutive
years, Barnes-Jewish Hospital has made the U.S. News & World
Report’s “Honor Roll,” of America’s Best Hospitals. The same
publication ranked them the seventh best hospital in the nation
in 2000 and 2001. Not only is it a top quality medical center, but
BJC HealthCare has an enormous impact on the region. It is the region’s
largest employer, with close to 26,000 employees. Bryan Bezold,
the RCGA’s Chief economist, estimates that the total direct and
indirect economic impact of BJC is approximately $3.9 billion per
year. The indirect economic impacts of BJC include an estimated
19,000 jobs throughout the region dependent upon BJC’s presence
here.
Leading this $2.2 billion enterprise is Steven Lipstein, president
& CEO, since January 2002. This month’s cover
story features this successful executive and BJC HealthCare.
Also profiled in this issue of St. Louis Commerce Magazine
is Carter Williams, who heads up the
Chairman’s Innovation Initiative at The Boeing Company. The Initiative
is essentially a company-wide business incubator, which seeks out
the talent and creativity of its own employees, to develop new technological
solutions. The program provides a way for Boeing employees to create
value and encourages entrepreneurship. Carter serves on the Executive
Committee of the Technology Gateway Alliance and chairs the Entrepreneurship
and Technology Transfer Committee, which facilitates the transfer
of technology developed by area institutions and businesses into
the workplace.
Speaking of entrepreneurs, the story entitled "Fantasy
Sports" features Brian Matthews, co-founder and chief executive
of CDM Fantasy Sports. His company was one of the first two companies
in the U.S. to go national with fantasy sports leagues. CBC Distribution
and Marketing, the parent company of CDM, is considered one of the
fastest-growing high-tech companies in St. Louis and the U.S. Associated
companies include River City Internet Group, CDM Properties, and
CDMVentures.com, not to mention Primary Network, an Internet service
provider.
In fact, Matthews’ companies have appeared more than once in the
rankings of FAST 50 technology companies in the region.
And on the topic of the St. Louis Regional FAST 50 Awards, this
year’s program has a new name and new angle.
The new Technology Top 50 will honor the top 50 St. Louis area technology
companies in three categories: Information Technologies,
Plant and Life Sciences, and Advanced Manufacturing.
The 2002 event is designed to more directly track the technology
industry clusters that the St. Louis region is pursuing as a centerpiece
of its economic development.
