Das Family
Gift Establishes Wash U Professorship in Electrical Engineering
Donald Indeck is the first Das Family Distinguished Professor
of Electrical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.
This professorship for the School of Engineering and Applied Science
was made possible by a $2 million gift from alumnus Santanu Das,
his wife Kabita and their two sons, Atanu and Arnab.
Indeck joined
Washington University in 1988. Prior to receiving the Das Distinguished
Professorship, he was professor of electrical engineering. He
continues to direct the Magnetics and Information Sciences Center
(MISC). IndeckÕs recent research at MISC has concentrated
on techniques for searching massive databases, such as those used
in cameras for digital image storages, television units and other
large data sets. He has been awarded more than a dozen patents,
including Magneprintª, the university's object recognition
system used in the authentication process for bankcards, checks
and currency. His awards include the National Science Foundation's
Presidential Young Investigator Award (presented by then President
George Bush), the IBM Faculty Development Award, the Washington
University Distinguished Faculty Award, as well as several awards
from the Institute of Electrical Engineering.
Das received
his doctoral degree in electrical engineering from Washington
University in 1973. Joining ITT shortly thereafter, Das embarked
on a career in telecommunications and data communications that
included significant developments and inventions that produced
advancements in the field.
At ITT, Das
participated in the development of the VLSI-based telephone switching
systems and workstation-based CAD systems. In 1986, he moved to
Spectrum Digital Corporation as vice president of engineering.
With the merger of Spectrum and Micom Digital, Das assumed the
presidency of Micom.
In 1988, Das
co-founded TranSwitch Corp., a company that designs, develops
and markets proprietary, highly integrated digital and mixed-signal
semiconductor solutions for telecommunications and data commutations.
Since its inception, Das has served as president and CEO, and
recently became chairman of the board of directors.
