Partners for Livable Communities Present Bridge Builder Awards

The Partners for Livable Communities presented Bridge Builders Awards to individuals associated with six projects that have crossed boundaries of race, economics and geography in their communities. Richard C.D. Fleming, president and CEO of the RCGA was the keynote speaker and Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. hosted the event.

The civic leaders who were honored for their success in bridging the racial and economic divides in their communities are U.S. Congressman John Lewis and U.S. Congressman Amo Houghton of New York for inspiring better working relationships on race issues among democrats and republicans in Congress; William Jones, Sol Price and Christine Kehoe for improving the lives of a disadvantaged San Diego neighborhood; Kathy Morgan and Ann Rubenstein Tisch for working with at-risk youth in New York City in preparation for college; Erwin Mitchell and Maria Olivia Villarreal-Solano for reaching out to a major influx of Hispanic workers and their families; Reverend Calvin O. Butts III and Jim Donald for establishing community partnerships in Harlem, New York; and the efforts of George Washington University, D.C.'s business and philanthropic communities and the government of the District of Columbia for their creation of the Center for Excellence in Municipal Management in Washington, D.C.


SSM Health Care CEO Named to MHA Board of Trustees

Ron Levy, president and CEO of SSM Health Care­St. Louis and regional president/system vice president of SSM Health Care, has been named to the board of trustees of the Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) for a one-year term. Levy represents MHA's fourth district, which encompasses St. Louis and the surrounding area.

As a member of the board of trustees, Levy oversees the administration of MHA and developing association policies. The board also oversees the financial matters of MHA and helps to consult with hospitals on legislative matters.

MHA is a not-for-profit membership association in Jefferson City that represents more than 150 Missouri hospitals and offers continuing education programs to the public and legislative representatives on current health-care topics.


Schnuck, Homan Elected to United Way Leadership

Two prominent St. Louis business leaders were elected to hold major leadership positions with the United Way of Greater St. Louis, which provides a vital network of health and human service efforts in the bi-state region.

Craig D. Schnuck, chairman and chief executive officer of Schnuck Markets, Inc. has been named chair of the United Way of Greater St. Louis board of directors for a two-year term. Schnuck, who served as chair of the 1999 fundraising campaign, succeeds Richard A. Liddy, chairman, president and chief executive officer of GenAmerica.

Prior to his new role, Schnuck served as marketing and communications chair for the United Way between 1989 and 1997 and as campaign executive vice chair in 1998. He is the third member of the Schnuck family to lead a United Way fundraising campaign, following his father, Donald O. Schnuck, and his uncle, Edward J. Schnuck.

C.R. (Ray) Holman, chairman and CEO for Mallinckrodt Inc., has been named chair of the United Way 2000 fundraising campaign, succeeding Schnuck. Holman, a longtime United Way volunteer, served as executive vice chair for the 1999 fundraising campaign. Holman joined Mallinckrodt in 1976 as assistant controller and held various positions in the firm until being elected president and CEO of Mallinckrodt Group in 1992. He was elected chairman of the board in October 1994.

Both Schnuck and Holman are members of Civic Progress and serve on the board of several major corporations, educational institutions, nonprofit groups and national organizations.


Krueger Named Partner of Rataj Architects

Kurtis R. Krueger has been named partner of St. Louis-based Rataj Architects, Inc., resulting in the change of the firm's name to Rataj-Krueger Architects, Inc.

Krueger began his career with Rataj Architects in 1996, bringing experience not only in the architectural field, but also in design/build. During his time with Rataj, Kurtis has specialized in professional office buildings as well as large-scale theater/auditorium construction. His new position as partner and project administrator of commercial projects will expand the firm's services.

Krueger is a 1987 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Architecture, where he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture.

The firm specializes in light commercial buildings, tenant finish with an emphasis on medical, retail design and entertainment projects, including the recently completed Wehrenberg Theatres Mid Rivers Mall 14 Cine and several new office buildings in South St. Louis and Jefferson counties.


Woll Named Principal of RBG Financial Institutions Services Group

Robert H. Woll, CPA, has been named principal-in-charge of the Financial Institutions Services Group at Rubin, Brown, Gornstein & Co. LLP (RBG&Co.), the largest locally owned accounting and consulting firm in St. Louis.

Woll's experience includes 15 years with a global accounting and consulting firm, where he specialized in depository institutions, mortgage banking, asset-based lending, consumer finance and leasing. He has assisted clients with initial public offerings, acquisitions, asset-backed securitization transactions and accounting for derivative financial instruments.

The Financial Institutions Services Group provides a wide range of planning, assurance, and consulting services for banks, savings and loans, and credit unions. It also publishes an annual Statistical Analysis of Emerging Banks and sponsors a periodic financial institutions roundtable.


Former Construction Controller Joins Welsch, Flatness & Lutz As CFO

As the new chief financial officer of Welsch, Flatness & Lutz, Denise Venhaus directs the accounting, human resources, management information systems and financial activities of the St. Louis-based firm. She also prepares annual budgets and monthly analysis, forecasting and cash flow projections to meet the long-range strategic planning objectives of the insurance, financial and risk-management services firm.

Prior to her new position, Venhaus was a controller of large construction companies for seven years and worked another seven years in public accounting. She has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Eastern Illinois University.

Welsch, Flatness & Lutz provides insurance, financial and risk management services with special expertise in the construction, health care and manufacturing industries.


Scheibal Joins The Doe Run Company As Chief Technology Officer

As the chief technology officer of The Doe Run Company, Carl G. Scheibal, Jr., directs the planning, implementation and management of the company's information systems in support of corporate strategies.

Scheibal has been a management consultant and corporate executive in information systems planning and implementation for several major companies, including KV Pharmaceutical, Deutsche Financial Services, Kellwood Company and Southwestern Bell. A registered professional engineer and senior member of the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers and Computer Society, Scheibal also has 21 years of experience as a commander in the U.S. Air Force Space Command.

The St. Louis-based Doe Run Company is the world's leader in mining, processing, recycling and fabrication of lead and lead products.


Walsh Named Partner at McCarthy, Leonard, Kaemmerer, Owen, Lamkin & McGovern

Katherine S. Walsh is the newest partner at McCarthy, Leonard, Kaemmerer, Owen, Lamkin & McGovern, L.C. Walsh, who specializes in insurance insolvency and administrative law litigation, joined the firm in 1994. She previously worked at The Stolar Partnership in St. Louis.

Walsh earned her undergraduate degree in government and sociology from St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana, and her law degree from Saint Louis University.

Founded in 1984, McCarthy, Leonard, Kaemmerer, Owen, Lamkin & McGovern, L.C. specializes in labor and employment law; civil litigation; administrative law; corporate and business law; real estate law; and insurance and reinsurance insolvency.


Charter Co-Founder Elected to Civic Progress

Jerald L. Kent, president and CEO of Charter Communications, Inc., has been named an active member of Civic Progress, an organization of chief executives from leading private sectors who help improve the quality of community and business life in the St. Louis region.

As co-founder of Charter, Kent has led the company to become the fourth largest cable operator in the United States with nearly six million subscribers. Prior to Charter, Kent was an executive officer, executive vice president and chief financial officer at Cencom Cable Associates, Inc. Kent also serves on the board of directors of Cable Television Laboratories, Inc., the cable industry's research and development arm for leading technology.

Kent received his M.B.A. with honors from Washington University.


AHA Chairman Elected to National Kidney Foundation Board

Fred L. Brown, chairman of the American Hospital Association (AHA) and vice chairman of BJC Health System, was elected to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) board of directors. The NKF is the nation's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to the prevention and treatment of kidney and urologic disease.

Brown serves on other boards as well, including: America's Doctor.com, Commerce Bancshares, Inc., Citation Computers, Inc., Dynamics Healthcare Advisors and the Healthcare Research and Development Institute.


Armstrong Teasdale Elects Accomplished New Partners

Due to their outstanding accomplishments in their respective areas of practice, Jennifer L. Arendes, Patrick J. Kenny, Gerald A. King and Daniel C. Nelson were elected to partnership at the law firm of Armstrong Teasdale LLP.

Arendes received her undergraduate degree from Tulane University (summa cum laude) in 1986 and her law degree from New York University Law School with Order of the Coif honors in 1991. Before joining the firm, she practiced in the Employment Law Department of a large New York City law firm for approximately three years. She has litigation experience in a wide range of employment cases, including the defense of age, race, national origin and sex discrimination claims under federal, state and local discrimination laws.

Kenny received his undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri­Columbia in 1987 and his law degree (cum laude) from the University of Missouri­Columbia Law School in 1990, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. While in law school, he was a teaching assistant in business law for the University of Missouri School of Business. From 1990 to 1992, he was a law clerk to Judge Pasco Bowman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. His diverse legal background includes commercial litigation and insurance defense.

King received his undergraduate degree from Rockhurst College in 1987 and his law degree from the University of Missouri­Kansas City Law School in 1990. A member of the Litigation Department, King has tried lawsuits in both Kansas and Missouri and specializes in real estate, insurance and patent litigation.

Nelson received his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University in 1988 and his law degree (Order of the Coif) from the University of Missouri­Columbia Law School in 1992. A member of the law firm's Litigation Department, he concentrates his practice in commercial litigation, antitrust technology, government and sales.


Gray Design Group Director Elected President of CREW

Ann Dulle, director of development for Gray Design Group, has been elected president of Commercial Real Estate Women of St. Louis (CREW), a not-for-profit organization that provides a communication network among commercial real estate professionals by encouraging business opportunities and facilitating professional development.

Civic Entrepreneurs Organization Elects Officers

The Civic Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO), a non-profit organization of St. Louis-area business leaders, elected Thomas J. Campbell, partner of Gallop, Johnson & Neuman L.C., as president. Other officers include Louis T. Maull, IV, president Louis Maull Company, president-elect; Cathy Dunkin, principal, The Standing Partnership, vice president-communications; John R. Moulton, Jr., shareholder, Duncker Streett & Co., vice president-finance; Allen Hauge, group chairman, TEC Worldwide, vice president-membership; and Ted A. Garcia, executive vice president and chief operating officer, KETC Channel 9, vice president-project development and review.

Max H. Nall, II, executive vice president, Chiodini Associates, received CEO's annual award for "Extraordinary Achievement in Entrepreneurial Leadership for 1999."

CEO brings regional, national and international attention to the community through events such as the annual Economic Forecast and the National Technology Forum. The organization also hosts the Saint Louis Art Fair, Saint Louis Film Festival and Missouri Valley Conference Post-Season Basketball Tournament.


Community Leader Heads Zoo-Museum District Board

Kay Marshall, who has a long history of service to the community, was elected chair of the board of directors of the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District.

The Zoo-Museum District motivates the community to support the cultural institutions that are beneficiaries of the district, including the St. Louis Zoological Park, Saint Louis Art Museum, St. Louis Science Center, Missouri Botanical Garden and the History Museum.

Marshall has served in various leadership capacities with the City's Planned Industrial Expansion, the Saint Louis Zoo Friends, Forest Park Forever, the Clifton Heights Neighborhood Association, St. Louis Ambassadors and The American Lung Association. She was chosen for Leadership St. Louis in 1992.

St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society, St. Louis' largest physician member association, installed its officers and councilors on the 159th meeting year of organized medicine.

With more than 2,200 members, St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Society works to make health care accessible to everyone, preserve the doctor/patient relationship, ensure patients' rights to choose their physicians and more.


Convergys President/CEO Adds Chairman to Title

James F. Orr, president and CEO of Convergys, has been elected as its new chairman to replace Charles S. Mechem, Jr. who retired in April.

Orr has helped build Convergys into a $1.8 billion company and the global leader in providing outsourced, integrated, customer care and billing services. Convergys software produces more than one million bills each day.

Orr was previously the chief operating officer, director, and president of Cincinnati Bell Inc. (CBI) and MATRIXX Marketing, the businesses that currently make up of Convergys. After significant growth as part of CBI, Convergys was spun off as an independent, public company in 1998.

Prior to joining CBI, Orr had more than 20 years of domestic and international experience in sales and marketing with Procter & Gamble.


Environmental Organization Appoints Director To Generate Community Partnerships

Laura Neuman has been named director of Choose Environmental Excellence-Gateway Region, a new organization emerging in the St. Louis metropoli tan area that promotes positive environmental actions. Neuman is responsible for generating commitment to environmental excellence through a working partnership with businesses, organizations, individuals and government. The organization's initial emphasis is on the promotion of simple waste reduction and recycling practices at home, work and school. The organization also encourages people to take simple steps to improve air quality, energy efficiency and water conservation.

As co-director for the Missouri Environmental Fund, Neuman, has been involved with the development and coordination of several programs, including Alliance for a Livable World--St. Louis Earth Day Community Festival and EarthWays, an environmental education center. Neuman currently serves as secretary for the Coalition of Environmental Federations, a nationwide network of state and regional federations that represents 900 environmental organizations.

With a journalism degree from the University of Missouri­Columbia, Neuman also completed CORO's Women in Leadership training.


Collins Named Partner at Creative Producers Group

Tracy Collins, senior vice president and creative director of Creative Producers Group (CPG), has been named a partner in the full-service, creative, production and marketing services agency.

Collins, who joined CPG in 1989, is responsible for strategic and design direction for the company's creative and production divisions. AV Video Multimedia Producer magazine named Collins one of the "Top 100" multimedia producers
