CENTRAL INSTITUTE FOR THE DEAF STUDENT’S STORY FEATURED IN KHALEEJ TIMES
The story of one family’s journey from the United Arab Emirates to the Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis was featured in the Oct. 19 issue of the Khaleej Times, an English-language daily newspaper published from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
In “Finding Hope for a Deaf Child,” United Arab Emirates national Mariam Ahmed Sawad Salem-Al-Ameri writes about her
family’s quest to find help for her first son, Yussuf, who was diagnosed as being deaf when he was four months old. After struggling to find treatment for her son at home and in her husband’s native country, India, Salem-Al-Ameri searched the Internet and
discovered that they might find help in the United States.
The family visited the John Tracy Clinic in Los Angeles in June 2006, where they learned about “a magical place called
St. Louis, Mo., the only city in the world
with three schools dedicated to helping hearing-impaired children learn to talk and participate in the world around them,” writes Salem-Al-Ameri.
After considering all three schools, the family enrolled Yussuf at the Central Institute for the Deaf in August 2006.
“Right away, our whole family fell in love with the way the teachers brought joy to
the children and made them love to come to class. Yussuf was no exception. Finally,
there was someone in the world to listen
to him.”

Sister Mary Jean Ryan, CEO of SSM Health Care, was featured in the “20 People Who Make Healthcare Better” cover story of HealthLeaders magazine’s November issue. The article offers snapshots of people who have made health care better in ways both large and small.
“Some hospital CEOs misuse the word ‘journey’ when they talk about their hospital’s quality program,” writes HealthLeaders Editor Jim Molpus. “But Sister Mary Jean Ryan, FSM, president and CEO of St. Louis-based SSM Health Care, can talk about a journey to quality that started almost two decades ago—and includes highs and lows, like all true journeys do.”
