In a figurative
sense, Scott Schnuck has always been a juggler. As president and
chief operating officer of Schnuck Markets, Scott–along with
the other talented members of his family, including CEO Craig Schnuck–has
done a magnificent job of steering the $2.2 billion company through
the shifting seas of the retail food business.
But Scott’s talents extend far beyond the business world.
In this month’s cover story, Pam Droog Jones paints an intriguing
picture of Scott’s multi-talented personality–and shows
how one of the region’s most successful corporate and community
leaders gets it all done.
In addition to being the proud father of three sons, Scott is also
chairman-elect of the RCGA (he will succeed Doug Yaeger in January
2005), president of the Missouri Botanical Garden, chair-elect of
the St. Louis Sports Commission, and past chairman of Junior Achievement
of Mississippi Valley. A great juggling act if there ever was one!
Also in this issue, we visit the Delmar Loop to see Joe Edwards’
Pin-Up Bowl, his latest entrepreneurial coup. While bowling has
always been a St. Louis tradition, the sport is enjoying an upswing
in popularity, particularly among the younger set.
If you’re considering a new logo for your company, Bill Poe
covers all the bases. Read what the design pros have to say, and
find out what to expect–including time and cost commitments–during
the creative process.
Thanks to a growing alliance between the hospitality and health
care industries, family members of long-term medical patients have
one less thing to worry about. Holly O’Brien has written an
interesting–and very moving piece–on Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s
and Saint Louis University’s efforts to keep patients and
their families closer together.
If you haven’t checked your credit card statements carefully
in the past, our story on identity theft will have you going over
them with a fine-toothed comb. From fingerprint scanners to 9,000-pound
shredding trucks, find out what you and your company can do to prevent
this growing crime.
If you’re fascinated by the recent explosion in low-carbohydrate
diets, our story on the low-carb craze will hit the spot. Find out
how local restaurants and food companies are adjusting to the changing
demands of their customers–and what a local physician thinks
about the trend.
Lastly, KSDK-TV’s Karen Foss, one of the most admired and
popular figures on St. Louis television, sat down with Commerce
for a candid and revealing look at her life and career. O’Brien
traces Foss’s roots to her Kansas City days, then hears what
Foss thinks about herself, St. Louis and her family.
