166TH ANNUAL
MEETING SPOTLIGHTS PUBLIC POLICY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES;
SALUTES BLANCHE TOUHILL & JOHN BACHMANN; WELCOMES DOUG YAEGER AS
CHAIRMAN
St. Louis regional business, civic and elected leaders—including
Governor Bob Holden, U.S. Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL), Mayor
Francis Slay, and new University of Missouri President Dr. Elson
Floyd—and RCGA members, were among 900 people who gathered for the
166th RCGA Annual Dinner and Meeting in January at the Chase Park
Plaza.

Doug Yaeger and Dick Fleming, president & CEO of the
RCGA. |

John Bachmann, who concluded his three-year term as Chairman of
the RCGA, reflected on his experiences since becoming Chairman on
January 1, 2000. He noted the region’s significant progress since
that time on such key regional economic development investments
as the expansion of Lambert–St. Louis International Airport, commending
the regional business community for joining forces so effectively
with the public sector to advance this most important project. Bachmann
also saluted his predecessor Dick Beumer, who initiated and led
the Strategy Advisory Team comprised of RCGA Board members over
a period of some 18 months in the late ’90s. Bachmann noted that
the Strategy Advisory Team helped raise the RCGA’s standards of
excellence in program design, implementation, regional collaboration,
leadership, resourcing, and marketing and funding.
Incoming RCGA Chairman Doug Yaeger underscored the
RCGA’s continuing commitment in 2003 to support revitalization
of the region’s center city and to fulfill the region’s
potential in targeted industries. |

Incoming RCGA Chairman Doug Yaeger underscored the RCGA’s continuing
commitment in 2003 to support revitalization of the region’s center
city—citing the historic restoration of the Chase itself, the recently
open convention headquarters hotel, hundreds of units of new center
city housing, the Old Post Office District and progress on the new
Ballpark and Ballpark Village as examples of positive momentum.
He also underscored our resolve to fulfill the region’s potential
in targeted industries of plant and life sciences, information technology,
advanced manufacturing, banking and financial services, and transportation,
cargo and distribution. Yaeger further noted that while both Missouri
and Illinois must deal with the current fiscal crises, we must also
focus on such critical issues as transportation, higher education,
and invest in such industries as life sciences, which will generate
a significant return on investment.
Enterprise CEO and 2001 Right Arm of St. Louis Award
winner Andy Taylor presented the 2002 Right Arm of
St. Louis Award to Dr. Blanche Touhill at the RCGA
Annual Dinner. |
|
The RCGA’s top honor, the Right Arm of St. Louis, was presented
by 2001 Right Arm winner Andy Taylor to just-retired University
of Missouri–St. Louis Chancellor Dr. Blanche Touhill. Blanche built
a great UM-St. Louis during her 12 years as Chancellor, adding 30
degree programs, increasing the campus’ offerings to 90 degree programs
overall, spearheading the $50 million performing arts center, and
a host of other accomplishments. We were pleased to have four former
Right Arm awardees in attendance, including Andy Taylor, 2001; E.
Desmond Lee, 1996; former RCGA Chairman Earle Harbison, Jr., 1995;
and Edwin Trusheim, 1992.
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performance was one
of the highlights of the evening. |
|
Members of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra once again provided
a wonderful addition to this year’s Annual Meeting. Thanks to Symphony
President Randy Adams for arranging the performance. Thanks also
to our 53 sponsors and media partners who made the evening’s dinner
and program possible.
