RCGA MEMBERS PROVIDE FREE TAX PREPARATION SERVICEBRING
BACK OVER $750,000 IN TAX REFUNDS TO ST. LOUIS REGION
During the month of February, RCGA members led a community initiative
to provide free tax preparation services to low-income families
and individuals in the St. Louis region. RCGA members trained to
become volunteer tax preparers and staffed free tax preparation
sites in Wellston, St. Louis, East St. Louis, and Alton. The volunteers
completed over 500 tax returns and generated over $750,000 in tax
refunds back to the region.
The initiative was organized by the Gateway EITC Partnership, a
coalition of the RCGA, The United Way of Greater St. Louis, Catholic
Charities of St. Louis, The Salvation Army, The Center for Economic
Progress, and the Internal Revenue Service. In addition to organizing
the free tax preparation sites, the Gateway EITC Partnership promotes
the filing of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Each
year, an estimated $28 to $64 million dollars remain uncollected
by St. Louis area residents, because eligible individuals and families
fail to claim the federal Earned Income Tax Credit. St. Clair County
Board Chairman John Baricevic, St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and
St. Louis County Executive Buzz Westfall declared February EITC
Month and encouraged citizens to file for the Earned Income Tax
Credit.
The free tax preparation sites were made possible by the generous
support of CityHouse, Urban Strategic, Inc., Tonercharge of St.
Louis, St. Louis County Government and the Metropolitan Employment
Center, St. Louis Community College, The Global Teleconferencing
Centre, J Buck’s Restaurant, and the Pasta House Company.
