WEBSTER UNIVERSITY REACHES RECORD NUMBERS IN 2002
DR. RICHARD MEYERS
president,
Webster University |
|
The year 2002 was a year for record numbers at Webster University.
Continuing their leadership as an international university, Webster
opened its 100th site. Webster now has sites in 18 U.S. states,
including almost 40 military bases, and eight foreign countries
with plans to launch additional sites this year. In 2003, the university’s
third site in China will open.
“If it weren’t for technology, we wouldn’t be able to offer all
the things we offer,” says Dr. Richard Meyers, president of Webster
University since 1994. He cites resources such as a virtual library
linking all Webster education sites, which allows the school to
expand and reach out to remote areas without drain of energy and
resources.
Other record numbers for the university include reaching enrollment
in 2002 of 20,000 students, 12,000 of those students are in business
programs. Webster also reached 100,000 alumni last year.
“We continue to look at other parts of the world in which we’re
not located,” says Dr. Meyers of Webster’s continuing growth opportunities.
“We go where people need us, where there are unmet needs.”

$117 MILLION COMMITMENT BY DANFORTH FOUNDATION
LEAP FROGS ST. LOUIS REGION'S POSITIONING IN PLANT & LIFE SCIENCES
DEVELOPMENT
The Danforth Foundation recently announced that it is committing
a substantial portion of its assets to a top St. Louis regional
opportunity for scientific leadership coupled to economic growth—
development and commercialization of the region’s world-class research
capabilities in plant and life sciences.
JOHN DANFORTH chairman, Danforth Foundation |
|
Seeking to dramatically strengthen the St. Louis region’s international
position as the BioBelt: The Center for Plant and Life Sciences—the
Foundation is devoting 60 percent of its uncommitted assets—some
$117 million—to grants promoting research in plant science and spin-off
commercial opportunities and jobs from all of the life sciences.
This commitment is the largest in the Foundation’s 75-year history
devoted to a single cause. As Foundation Chairman John Danforth
noted, “St. Louis is already an international leader in life sciences
research. Our region faces a wealth of economic development possibilities
from commercial applications of groundbreaking research being done
here in both plant and biomedical sciences. If our region and state
seize the opportunities, plant and life sciences can be the economic
engine for St. Louis for decades to come.”
DR. WILLIAM DANFORTH
chairman,
Coalition for Plant & Life Sciences |
|
Results of a study by the Battelle Memorial Institute, which was
commissioned more than two years ago by the RCGA, the Danforth Foundation
and Civic Progress, found that St. Louis is second only to Canada
in plant science activity, and with a systematic effort, St. Louis
could be tops in the world in plant sciences. Battelle also determined
that St. Louis could be top tier in the life sciences overall. With
that information, the region launched a long-term branding and marketing
effort dubbing St. Louis as the BioBelt: The Center for Plant
and Life Sciences, and the RCGA and Civic Progress enlisted
Dr. William Danforth to chair the Coalition for Plant & Life
Sciences to implement key elements of the Battelle Strategy.

The Danforth Foundation’s commitment shows the world that St. Louis
is serious about becoming a key center for life sciences research
and industry. Over the next two years, the Foundation will make
grants focusing on supporting its commitment to plant and life sciences
in
St. Louis. |
