Peabody Energy,
with its corporate headquarters in St. Louis, is the largest private-sector
coal company in the world. Its coal fuels 9 percent of U.S. electricity
and more than 2 percent of the world’s. Last year Peabody Energy
shipped a record 182 million tons of coal to more than 290 customers
in 12 countries spanning five continents. And it boasted record
revenues of $2.4 billion.
Not only are they the largest coal company, but also named the best
by the 2000 Financial Times Global Energy Awards (an international
award based on safety and environment record, productivity, innovative
strategy and shareholder value).
Behind this high-achieving energy producer is leader Irl Engelhardt,
chairman and CEO since 1990. He joined the company in 1979. During
his tenure, he has shown consistency and adaptability to changes
in owners, capital structure and the market place. He’s taken leadership
to a new level. Irl also serves on the RCGA’s board of directors
and Civic Progress.
Another individual committed to the RCGA’s mission is Frank Hackmann.
He’s a partner with Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal and the subject
of this month’s profile. His involvement with the RCGA for the past
three years, as board vice chair for environment, has contributed
to balancing the region’s economic growth and environmental quality.
The profile on page 64 focuses on Frank’s environmental law practice
and how he addresses the real life issues of finding ways to make
regulations more effective and user-friendly.
Particularly timely this month is the story on page 20 written by
Kevin Kipp, entitled Sport Support. The sidebar focuses on
Edward Jone’s recent sponsorship of the Edward Jones Dome. Edward
Jones will pay up to $73.6 million over 23 years to link its company
name to the NFL and championship football in St. Louis.
The Dome has also been in the news lately because of its enormous
tax benefits to the region. According to a study conducted by University
of Missouri–St. Louis Economics professor, Donald Phares, the Edward
Jones Dome and Convention Center together will contribute $111 million
to state, local and city tax coffers annually.
The same week that the sponsorship was announced, Fortune Magazine
named Edward Jones #1 on its annual ranking of the “100 Best Companies
to Work For.” Congratulations to Edward Jones Managing Partner and
RCGA Chairman John Bachmann and his colleagues on these two tremendous
accomplishments.
