Loran Schnaidt, Major General, Missouri Air National Guard (Ret),
was formally installed as the 2001-2002 Chairman of the RCGA Military
Affairs Committee at a Missouri Athletic Club dinner on January
30. Schnaidt took the gavel from Carl Tegtmeier, Brigadier General,
U.S. Army Reserve (Ret) who was chairman for 1999-2000.
Schnaidt who retired in April 2000, was Commander of the Missouri
Air National Guard. He transferred to the Missouri Air National
Guard in 1973 and held various positions with units at Jefferson
Barracks and Lambert Field before being assigned to the State Headquarters
in Jefferson City in 1987 as Director of Operations. He was Assistant
Adjutant General–Air, before becoming Chief of Staff and Commander
of the Missouri ANG. In his civilian career, he was a manufacturer’s
representative until 1984 when he formed CAVU Enterprises, a marketing
consulting business that he operated until 1998. He joined the Adjutant
General’s staff on a full-time basis in 1998.
Guest speaker for the evening was Major General Anders B. Aadland,
Commanding General U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center and Commandant
of the U.S. Army Engineer School, both located at Fort Leonard Wood.
General Aadland spoke about the priority he placed on connecting
with the communities around Ft. Leonard Wood, including St. Louis,
where the affiliation was established decades ago. He pointed out
that Ft. Leonard Wood contributes about $32 million to the St. Louis
economy in various support contracts and activities. Ft. Leonard
Wood has witnessed enormous growth in recent years as military downsizing
has led to additional missions and tremendous facilities improvements,
“not visible from I44,” he said. A Business Research Park, with
State support and University of Missouri direction, is under development
at the Fort.
In accepting the Chairmanship, Schnaidt talked about some of the
planned initiatives. Recently, the Committee has become involved
with the St. Louis Committee of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation
that was established in 1962 to help fund higher education for the
children of Marines and former Marines. The Scholarship Committee
is planning a reception and dinner on August 4 at Boeing. Their
goal is to contribute $250,000 to the national foundation to establish
an endowment in the name of the St. Louis group that already has
contributed over $2 million in that last 20 years.
Schnaidt also discussed the Fort Leonard Wood March to the Stadium
that is scheduled for June 15. Troops will be bused to St. Louis,
March the 8 miles to Busch Stadium, participate in a pre-game ceremony
and attend the Cardinal game with the Chicago White Sox. The Military
Affairs Committee is helping to coordinate City of St. Louis support
for the March and ceremony.
Also in the plans for 2001 are visits to major Military Installations
by St. Louis leaders, a reception for local defense contractors,
visits to local defense contractors, working with Missouri National
Guard and State representatives to promote the development of Jefferson
Barracks as a historical site and continue to support the annual
Bridge of Friendship Dinner with Scott AFB.
