Not only
is MetLife’s purchase of GenAmerica positive news for 300,000 policyholders,
it’s good news for some 2,500 employees whose jobs will remain here
in St. Louis. In fact, recently Richard Liddy, former chairman,
president and CEO of GenAmerica, said he expects that MetLife will
be adding technical, administrative, professional and marketing
jobs in the area over the next three or four years. This month’s
cover story focuses on GenAmerica’s remarkable corporate comeback.
Speaking of the region’s workforce, the RCGA, postnet.com and Hire.com
have formed a partnership in a unique civic venture to create StLouisAtWork.com,
a regionwide technology-driven workforce talent portal (featured
in a story on p. 33). This new web site, which was formally unveiled
last month, is designed to be the premier online career destination
for St. Louis regional employers and job candidates by combining
job postings and job candidate profiles, company profiles, links
to education and training programs and educational opportunities,
workforce-related web links, employer web links, and a variety of
other workforce enhancement products and tools.
The RCGA Board has identified “workforce enhancement” as a critical
issue affecting the region’s economic competitiveness. StLouisAtWork.com
will be a centerpiece of the RCGA’s regional workforce initiative.
It creates a common platform to benefit both job candidates and
the region’s employers, strategically addressing the challenges
of the highly competitive labor market.
StLouisAtWork.com
also complements the overall mission and goals of the Regional Workforce
Policy Group, convened by the RCGA and the East-West Gateway Coordinating
Council, at the request of the Governors of both Missouri and Illinois.
St. Louis is the only such formally recognized bi-state workforce
development planning region in the nation.
StLouisAtWork.com also is designed to be a unique regional asset
that will be a significant tool for numerous educational institutions,
civic institutions, skills training programs and other community-based
organizations. Civic organizations from the public, private and
educational sectors are currently being enlisted as “channel partners.”
Channel partners will receive a link from StLouisAtWork.com to their
web sites. They will also benefit through association in advertising
and promotional materials, and will have the opportunity to refer
potential job candidates into the StLouisAtWork.com database. To
date, channel partners include the University of Missouri at St.
Louis and the RCGA Technology Gateway Alliance.
