Shaw Arboretum
got a new identity for holiday season 2000. The natural wonderland
in Gray Summit, Mo., is now known as the Shaw Nature Reserve. In
making the announcement, the Missouri Botanical Garden Board of
Trustees noted the name Shaw Nature Reserve best fits the programs
at the nearly 2,500-acre property near the Meramec River, 30 miles
west of St. Louis.
Shaw Nature Reserve is named in honor of Missouri Botanical Garden
founder Henry Shaw. Decades after Shaw’s death, the property was
established in 1925 as a refuge for the Missouri Botanical Garden’s
plants suffering from urban coal smoke. During the 1930s, the pollution
abated and the directors decided to operate the facility for environmental
education, native plant horticulture, ecological restoration and
to provide opportunities for public enjoyment of nature.
Visitors to the Shaw Nature Reserve can explore Ozark landscape,
15 miles of hiking trails, the Whitmire Wildflower Garden or participate
in nature education programs.
