St. Louis Shows Encouraging R&D Job Growth

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the St. Louis metro area gained nearly 500 new scientific research and development jobs during a 12-month reporting period ending in February. This seven-percent increase brings the total number of R&D positions to 7,600.

In the past four years, R&D employment growth in St. Louis is over 33 percent—remarkable, compared to select major biotech markets during that timeframe:

- San Jose: 3.5 percent
- San Diego: 6.1 percent
- Boston: 13.3 percent

Neuroscientists and neonatologists at Washington University School of Medicine have shown that the developing brain is vulnerable to damage from glutamate, a nervous system messenger compound. But scientists working with mice also found damage that could not be linked to glutamate, suggesting that different medicines are needed for premature infants.

Ulrich Medical to Base U.S. Subsidiary in Chesterfield

Ulrich Medical, a German spinal implant and surgical device manufacturer, plans to base its U.S. subsidiary in Chesterfield. Among Ulrich’s products is the obelisc, a vertebral replacement used in spinal reconstruction.

Dr. William Danforth Honored at Outstanding St. Louis Scientist Awards

William Danforth, M.D. on April 24 at the 13th Annual Outstanding St. Louis Scientist Awards received a Science Leadership Award in recognition of leadership and impact on the region in science, engineering or technology. This is the award’s charter year; Sigma-Aldrich Corp. received the other.

The other eight honorees are: Kattesh V. Katti, Ph.D.; Eric C. Leuthardt, M.D.; Patrick L. Osborne, Ph.D.; Robert M. Senior, M.D.; Ali Shilatifard, Ph.D.; Patricia E. Simmons, Ph.D.; Philip Stahl, Ph.D., and David Van Essen, Ph.D.
