INVESTING IN THE REGION

By Debra Solomon Baker

TOM CORNWELL
president,
DRS Technologies Inc.

When Tom Cornwell finishes a week of work, he leaves knowing that he has helped win battles, save lives, and bring America’s heroes home.

After all, he spends his days solving the toughest problems facing our military.

One of four operating systems within DRS Technologies Inc. is the St. Louis-based DRS Sustainment Systems Segment. This segment, for which Cornwell serves as president, is a diversified supplier of integrated military electronics, support equipment and technical services focused on advanced sustainment and logistics support solutions. For whom? All branches of the U.S. armed services, major prime defense contractors, certain international militaries, homeland security forces, and selected government and intelligence agencies.

The segment also produces specialized equipment and systems for commercial and industrial applications.

“We are providing the next generation of armored fire support vehicles, the next generation of armored protection for military vehicles, the capability to provide soldiers with water bottled right on the battlefield, the latest technology for advanced protection from chemical-biological attack, and much more,” says Cornwell, who also serves as an adjunct professor at Webster University. He is committed to developing dynamic solutions for our nation’s military forces. Cornwell finds those moments where he knows that he has converted challenges into opportunities as the most rewarding part of his job. He expects to do even more of that, as he looks ahead to the next five years.

Cornwell’s primary objective as a leader is to help open doors and break down barriers to success, and is confident that his team is highly capable of achieving its mission.

“We will continue to develop our in-house engineering team so that it has an increasingly invigorated perspective, through internships, partnerships with outside firms, and new hires,” says Cornwell.

The St. Louis team consists of just over 600 employees.

“We’re building the team that we expect to lead us to success against tomorrow’s challenges.”

When not focused on the building of that team, Cornwell enjoys playing with his own personal “team” of five grandchildren and traveling to Florida with his family. He also serves on the Board of Directors for AAIM and on the St. Louis Foundation Board of Directors.

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE INSIGHTS

What is your favorite part of summertime in St. Louis?

“My favorite aspect of summer in St. Louis... is that my patients get to be more active outdoors, exercise more often, enjoy more hours of daylight and, in general, be more motivated to stay healthy. On a more personal level, I enjoy watching and coaching my sons in their many sporting interests and being able to walk my two Labrador retrievers in the cool night air in the local park with complete confidence in safety.”

“For me, it wouldn’t be summertime in St. Louis without hearing the Muny’s fabulous Opera under the stars, or soaking up the smiling faces at the VP Parade and at U.S. Bank’s vibrant Fireworks Shows set against the backdrop of our signature Arch.”

Joseph F. Imbs III
St. Louis Market President,
U.S. Bank
