The magazine ranked companies within their respective industries as well as on the overall list. Anheuser-Busch claimed the No. 1 spot in the beverages category, and Emerson Electric ranked No. 2 in the electronics industry category. In its sixth consecutive appearance on the list, Graybar ranked No. 1 in the diversified wholesalers category. Peabody Energy ranked No. 4 in the mining and crude oil production industry.

ENGINEERING NEWS-RECORD SPOTLIGHT DIVERSITY TRAINING EFFORTS ON I-64 RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT

The Missouri Department of Transportation has selected PRIDE of St. Louis Inc. to oversee a landmark workforce diversity training and employment program for the Interstate 64 reconstruction project. Engineering News-Record has featured the collaborative effort in an article called “Missouri DOT Joins Labor and Management to Build Road Project’s Diverse Craft Force.”

Writer E. Michael Powers details MoDOT’s efforts to recruit and train minority and female workers for the $535 million reconstruction project. Those efforts include offering financial incentives to contractors and crafting an eight-week pre-apprenticeship training program that targets a younger workforce. The program also taps into the power of local church groups to find potential trainees within the minority community, according to Powers.

The I-64 program “involves $1.5 million to train about 240 women and minority pre-apprentices for heavy-highway work, and likely for other trades,” writes Powers. “MoDOT also has committed another $1 million in placement incentives for contractors. Workers will join the projected 500-person I-64 labor force, which will reconstruct 10.5 miles of the Interstate over the next four years.”
