“Where is Missouri’s first tunnel located?”
“Lindbergh Boulevard at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.”
“Which company managed the project?”
According to Mel Millenbruck, vice president and office manager for the St. Louis office of URS Corporation, far too many people would be unable to answer that question. He admits that his company, despite its recognition by Engineering-News-Record magazine as the #1 Design Firm in the United States, is, locally, a well-kept secret.
It shouldn’t be. After all, the aforementioned airport tunnel recently earned URS the American Consulting Engineers Award (ACEC) of Missouri 2005 Design Excellence Competition “Grand Conceptor” Award.
And whether St. Louisans are hopping on their bicycles, into their automobiles, or onto airplanes this summer, chances are, they will benefit from successful URS projects. The firm’s 120 local employees have worked on most of the major projects at Lambert, (including the new runway), the North Riverfront Business Corridor Master Plan, Forest Park Program Management, and Page Avenue/I-270 Interchange Redesign, to name just a few.
The local office, one branch of the company’s major global operation, specializes in a number of sectors: Transportation Engineering and Planning, Bridge/Structural Engineer-ing, Water/Wastewater Engineering and Hydrology, Urban Planning, Environmental Engineering/Science/ Ecology, and Site/Civil Design, to name a few.
“URS’ growth strategy has shifted from growth by acquisition to organic growth based on increased market share and an expanded client base,” says Millenbruck, who has 34 years of experience in the Transportation Engineering business here in St. Louis. “One key advantage URS has in the engineering services market is one of the lowest overhead rates in the industry. Our efficient business model is a tremendous value for our clients.”
That client list is long and impressive, including the City of St. Louis, Anheuser-Busch, Metropolitan Sewer District of St. Louis, and Solutia.
Thrilled to be located in the Highlands Plaza, Millenbruck says that URS has a firm commitment to the city of St. Louis.
“Since we do a lot of work for the city, we felt it was important to be right there,” says Millenbruck. “We understand how important it is for the city to thrive.”
With a global staff of nearly 27,000, San Francisco-based URS Corporation, a publicly held company, now stands as one of the largest engineering firms in the United States.
