DWIGHT DAVIS TENNIS CENTER SIGNS MANAGEMENT PARTNER

Apted-Hulling Inc., a St. Louis management company, has recently been approved by the Dwight Davis Tennis Center board of directors to manage and operate the tennis center for the 2004 season. The center, located in Forest Park, will continue to host the St. Louis Aces, a professional team, as well as tennis teams for the National Junior Tennis League, the Pylar Enrichment Program, Washington University and others. The new management team plans to add a training facility and to develop training programs for all ages and skill levels.

STAN GELLMAN GRAPHIC DESIGN WINS INCLUSION IN THE 2004 INTERNATIONAL ASTRID AWARDS


Stan Gellman Graphic Design Inc. was awarded inclusion in the 14th annual 2004 International Astrid Awards competition, honoring outstanding achievement in design communications. A bronze award was received for St. Louis Commerce Magazine’s 2004 January/Roster issue. This issue of Commerce includes the “Who’s Who, What’s What in St. Louis,” a comprehensive guide to the 12-county bistate region.

FOLLMAN BREAKS GROUND ON PERSIMMON POINTE



The new 33,800-square-foot Persimmon Pointe Market broke ground recently at the northwest corner of highways K and 40 in O’Fallon, Mo.

The new 33,800-square-foot Persimmon Pointe Market broke ground recently at the northwest corner of highways K and 40 in O’Fallon, Mo. The 4.7-acre project is being developed by Follman Properties • ONCOR International, and is 24 percent pre-leased. Two new hotels, Stay Bridge and Country Inn & Suites, are under construction adjacent to the site. Persimmon Pointe is also located across from the new CitiMortgage facility, with about 5,000 employees.

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY BREAKS GROUND ON NEW ART MUSEUM

Washington University in St. Louis broke ground April 14 on the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, formerly the Washington University Gallery of Art. The 65,000-square-foot limestone-clad structure is one of two new buildings designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki as part of the $56.8 million, five-building Sam Fox Arts Center.

The new museum is made possible following a $5 million gift from members of the Kemper family. The figure includes $1 million from Mildred’s husband, James M. Kemper Jr., chairman emeritus of Commerce Bancshares Inc.; $1 million from their son, David W. Kemper, chairman, president and CEO of Commerce Bancshares and vice chairman of Washington University’s Board of Trustees, and his wife, Dotty Kemper; and an additional $3 million by the William T. Kemper Foundation.

The Manufacturing Council will ensure that manufacturers of all sizes have a voice in the ongoing implementation of the Bush administration’s manufacturing initiative.

ST. ANTHONY’S BEGINS REGISTERING EMERGENCY PATIENTS BEDSIDE

Patients visiting St. Anthony’s Medical Center Emergency Department will no longer have to register in the waiting room before being admitted. Instead, patients are being taken immediately to a treatment room, where they are registered bedside by registrars using wireless laptop computers. The change is designed to protect patients’ privacy, accelerate treatment, improve quality of service, and increase patient satisfaction. The hospital, located in St. Louis County, operates the second-largest emergency department in Missouri and serves more than 70,000 patients annually.

FRONTIER PLANS ST. LOUIS / MEXICO SERVICE


Frontier Airlines has announced its intention to expand its service to Cancun, Mexico, by offering non-stop flights from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and other destinations outside of its Denver hub. The company has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation for authorization to serve Cancun from St. Louis, Kansas City International Airport and Salt Lake City International Airport. Initially, the service will be offered only on Saturdays. If granted government approval, Frontier would begin the Cancun service on July 3, 2004.

In related news, Frontier has relocated its operations at Lambert from Concourse A to Concourse D. Officials say the move will provide passengers with easier access to gates. “Frontier’s growing presence in St. Louis is representative of the renewed interest in this market,” says Leonard L. Griggs Jr., director of the airport. “Frontier’s move to Concourse D will expedite the screening process at our Concourse A security check point.”

The International Business Outlook Conference (IBOC) took place April 16 at the Charles F. Knight Executive Education Center at Washington University in St. Louis. The focus of the gathering was to provide practical information to Midwest businesses for successfully operating in an international environment. This year’s conference focused primarily on conducting business in South America, the new European Union and Asia.

VOODOO CAFÉ & LOUNGE OPENS AT HARRAH’S ST. LOUIS


Harrah’s Entertainment has opened a $16 million VooDoo Café and Lounge at Harrah’s St. Louis Casino & Hotel. The club features a state-of-the-art sound system and two 32-foot-tall glass walls that can display oversized video and digital images. The café and lounge also offers more than 30 plasma and video screens to provide the ultimate audio-visual experience.

FERRIS WHEEL RETURNS TO FOREST PARK

Months after its New Year’s Eve debut, the Ferris Wheel returns this summer to Forest Park, beginning May 26 and running through Aug. 19. The 11-story Wheel, sponsored by Express Scripts, pays homage to the 1904 World’s Fair, when a similar Ferris Wheel lorded over the park. Hours of operation will be Monday through Thursday, noon to 6 p.m., and Friday, Saturday and Sunday, noon to 9 p.m.
